I'm coming down mid October and will hit Perdido and the pier most of the week. I fished the pier several times in June and got skunked. What should I be looking for in gear set-up, baits, best times to fish etc.?

Search past reports in the October months. Many on here would agree it's one of the best months to fish. Also you can search for tackle questions and gear setup in the search bar(top right of screen). Most freshwater setups can handle most of the species from the pier.
You are coming in Prime Time then If you get skunked then it will be because you didn't fish Everything should be around and biting My favorite is spanish mackerel on a bubble rig Easy to fish and you can catch most any surface feeding fish with them Use them with any medium action spinning combo with 150-200 yds of 10-12 lb mono This rig is easy to tie but can be bought ready made at J&M Get you a couple of gotcha plugs and some looney jigs and you are in business Be there at daylight and you should have no problem catching fish If you want to fish for kings etc have you a 5000-6000 size combo with at least 300 yds of line Simple ready made king rig from J&M and a couple of sabiki rigs to catch live bait Get some cigar minnows as a backup if no live bait around Go to the end and throw it out with everyone else and you should manage one of these also If you get tired of catching fish this way get you some bull minnows and drop them around the pilings in the shallows on a carolina rig or throw it out and slowly move it back in and you should catch flounder and slot reds Also fresh shrimp on a carolina rig or drop rig should produce you some whiting ground mullet and other fish These approaches will also produce fish in the surf surf fishing I also slay the flounder and some 2lb or better croakers in Little Lagoon in October Can be caught wade fishing the lagoon pass on the lagoon side Bull Reds should be at Fort Morgan also I just can't say enough about October So many options Your problem will be not just catching fish but deciding which fish you want to catch
To follow up on Dan's post, pack a few tubes of muscle rub..your arms gonna be hurtin'
Our final day on the pier last October, We left with aching arms and cramping fingers. We crawled our exhausted old body's off the pier through a gauntlet of Spanish flying over the rail.
We love the fishing in October. We are excited about the sea wall at Perdido Pass being opened back up, and looking forward to surf fishing at Ft. Morgan some more. I am dreading having to endure the 'netters, though.
That's when I hope to return for the fastest week of the year. Looking forward to watching the catchers in action. Dan and Mr Wire to name a few.Roll Tide
