FYI, Field and Stream in Mobile has Okuma V series reels for 50% off, just picked up an SV65 for $34.98. They have 25,35,45&55's too.
Now to find a good rod to stick it, thinking an Ugly Stik....

!!!!! Dang!!!!!
I'll be in Mobile on Friday. Definitely going to check this out. Thanks Carl!
Ask for George, he was very helpful, knew what he was talking about. Went into the stock room and dug out the 65s which had not been put out on display yet.
You can also find it right now at that price on the fieldandsteamshop.com website, FREE SHIPPING! Type OKUMA in the search box and presto!
Picked up a BPS Offshore Angler Brawler 7' rod today, so I have my new king rig for this spring!
Thanks Carl for the tip on the Okuma reels and PatRyan for the free shipping for online order info! The only Okumas I own are cheaper models on Tundra surf rods and they have been ok for the $30 I paid for each combo. The price and free shipping made it a good time to buy a couple of the V series and try them out.
What I saw online was the okuma stratus v, still a good deal on a good reel for graphite construction, but not their high end aluminum v model that sells for around $200. If you snagged one of them for $40 at the local store it is a steal....I almost bought one earlier but decided on a penn battle instead. All we need now is kings. Preferably w/o sharks. :)
Yep, its the SV, their mid-price point reel. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive.
I paid $35 for the reel, $39 for the rod, $8 for a new spool of high-vis green 15# line, $2.50 for new pack of 27# wire, $4.50 for a pack of black swivels and $4.50 for a box of #4 4x trebles. For about $95+tax, all I need is some bait and I am ready for the kings, reds, jacks, etc...
Thanks Carl ordered a v55 today no shipping.
May still use my 35 year old king rod and reel from time to time just to make sure it doesn't get lonely ! Or use it to chunk plugs.
Is the 55 or 65 the better buy? They are the same price ($35). Currently I have a Penn Fierce 6000 which I have been using for general purpose the last 2 trips I took down there last year. I'm looking for a backup as I don't have anything else that's very capable since most fishing I do is smaller jigs and have very low line capacity.
the 65 is considerably more line capacity with 4:8:1 gear ratio where the 55 has 4:5:1
Any reason NOT to get the 65 model? Or should I hold out and get something better?
edit: meh, upon googling around, it looks like the Okuma Stratus reels don't fare too well in salt if you aren't real meticulous about cleaning them. Good enough excuse for me to hold off and look for something better.
Ordered yesterday and got today and no shipping. How good is that
Same deal going on now at Dicks Sporting Goods!
Heads up to all but I got one of these today for $29 shipped for a 65 from Dick's Sportinggoods.
They local store to me has marked them 10% off the sale price.i got them for $22.47 for the 45 series.
