Orange Beach Kayak fishing.

Hey guys I'm headed down to Orange Beach this weekend and plan on taking the kayak. I'm wanting to get on some reds and looking for recent info. I know there's Perdido Pass and Little Lagoon but I'm wondering which will be my best chance to find some good reds. Or if there are any other good locations for a kayak. Also I may be up to going off the front beach a little ways to try to get into some other species but not sure what's good this time of year. Plus I would be completely new to the offshore game. Thanks for any help!

I would stay away from the pass if in a kayak as it is too dangerous around there. I take my yak just outside the second sandbar and run along the shoreline casting for reds. If I am targeting Spanish or kings I will troll about 1/2-1 mile offshore. Right now kings and Spanish are good near/off shore. There are many public access spots all along the beach that you can launch the yak at. I just cant stress enough to be careful out there and I would stay within sight of the condos or within a mile. You should be able to get ahold of some reds just fishing from shore using mullet/shrimp..etc

Thanks! Yeah I think I'll definitely try the trolling like you mentioned as well while chasing reds. What are you trolling with for the kings and spanish if you don't mind me asking.

You didn't ask me, but if I were trolling for kings from a yak I would hang a cigar minnow on a #4 treble through the nostril with a stinger hook about 4" or 5" back (40 lb single strand wire). Same rig we use for drifting/flatlining.

Just as frednic said, use a cigar minnow and I sometimes cast a rattletrap, X-rap, or gotcha while I have the cigar trolling.

Is there a pretty standard depth y'all are trying to stay around while trolling for the kings? Thanks

Personally I do not. If I have no hits near the surface I will add a little bit of weight to sink it down some. I try to work the entire water column.

Rod and reels that can handle bull reds should be fine for the kings? And picking up the Spanish trolling gold and silver spoons I assume? Thanks guys for the tips and info!

Yeah if it can handle a bull red you should be fine with a king. Just know that a large king will run 150yds off like nothing so make sure you have enough line on the spool.
