Hey I just won an eBay auction for a 704z "greenie" and would like to know how well this reel is for king mackerel? I want to replace my 5000 Fierce which I'm very wary about for King Mackerel so I'm just looking for opinions on the Greenie hahah.

I have seen a lot of people have success with them at the pensacola pier for kings. I have used them before and they work pretty well for the kings. I recomend using it for kings.
Perfect for kings.
might want to upgrade the drag washers to the ht100, if it isn't already
Great it sounds like I'll be happy with it, now should I spool 15 lb mono or 20 lb mono? Just in case i hook up a Cobia , I've done that twice when just messing around with my LY right by the pilings, both times, they were on 16 mono and too green and broke off. And I doubt it has the HT 100, what $$ will that cost if you know?
Thanks everyone
Very cheap. Get in touch with the_reel_doc. He can get them for you and for less than $5 probably.
I would use the 20 lb line for it. It holds 300 yes of it and that is enough for kings and cobia. For the ht-100's I'm not sure the actual price but i know they are pretty cheap, i think under $10 for a set
when i posted i was thinking of the 706 oops. doesn't hold 300yds of 20
Bring the reel by and let me look at it.The bail bumper, roller, shaft, anti reverse and a couple other things need to be looked at before using. If the reel needs to be cleaned, the charge is $15 pluss parts. As for the washers, they run $1.25 each and three are required. I would put a 150yds of 20lb dacron backing and top it off with your choice of mono. The reason for the backing is because dacron has no stretch and those old spools are cast, not machined and will blow up in a heart beat if the line is packed on tight.Be extra careful when fighting sharks, tarpon and jacks with the old spools.
Alrighty, I'll bring it by in the next few weeks once it comes in Mr. John. Thanks everyone. I would not want anything like that to happen haha.
Hey Mr. John, how much would that be for the backing and mono top shot on that greenie after the upgrade? And I'll probably want to make it a manual, but I can wait on that one depending on what it looks like when I get it, the pics looked really good.
Why didn't you just get a 706 then?? from what I hear, a much better reel anyway ....would have cost more but you get what you pay for in the end
I'll be here tomorrow ....what does a rowdy rod look like?

Get that Zebco Cardinal.
Is that a 2 pc. Fenwick on the right? Its hard to find treasure like that around here...
Better than a Fierce holds alot more line
Didn't get the 706 because I didn't have the money at the time $100 was my max right now to spend. (It was prize money), even though i wanted to, I got the 704 for 55$ shipped in good condition from a fellow in Foley surprisingly, because I lost a bid on a lot of reels (7000 and 3000) by $1.00. I would've paid $96.50 for a Fierce 7000 and 3000 together haha. But oh well. When i get back from college, ill build my arsenal up much more. I love the simplicity of the Z series reels. I Just wouldn't want them (or any reel in that case) to sit for 4 years unused and then lock up on me or just sit there and get damaged or stolen haha.
you aren't serious, are you??
that isn't what I was looking at, I have found a few things (rods) recently....one will mostly likely get on ebay,(the big one 10ft'er) but the other is a keeper(8-1/2 ft)....putting together a few 2 pcs for future trips in smaller vehicles
I may call you, if your at the shop tomorrow(early morning).... for advice while at the sale, if there is anything that interests me....if that's OK....if not I'll just wing it and take my chances
Not sure if John was joking with you or not, but in my opinion Zebco Cardinals are great "old school" reels! Very reliable, at least as far as freshwater fishing goes, not sure how salt effects them. Used them as a kid on occasion while growing up and liked them. Those experiences are what caused me to purchase another one. Just my opinion for what it's worth...
Oh I had a cardinal and yes they worked good for a lighter reel...I was looking for something slightly larger, but you never know with me, and what looks decent at the time....I have way to many now as it is....but I have to feed the addiction with possible goods deals on old school gear....
John kinda started it anyway with the rod rebuild...went from an ugly pea green to a beautiful chestnut brown almost like wood....the natural fiberglass....Garcia conolon blank
The Zebco Cardinal is the Crown Prince of the old school spinning reels. The 6's and 7's are the saltwater versions although I have used the 4's extensively for spanish and reds and they have worked perfectly. I fought a tarpon for 30 minutes last summer off the GSPP on a Cardinal 7 and had him about half way back in before he pulled the hook on a bomber pogy.
So yes. Get the Cardinal. Always.
