PENN Fierce 6000
I just picked up a PENN 6000 from a local maw and paw bait shop and was wondering if anyone would give me some tips on what rod and line I should put on it for fishing next week when I head down there. (figured it would be a good king or bull red reel) feel free to correct me if I'm wrong for using it for that setup...Lol

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
dont know what your looking for in a rod but the line would be momoi 17 lb you can take it to j&m and they will spool it for you
-
Re: PENN Fierce 6000
thanks kingkiller thats about what lineI was thinking myself. Would I need a rod over 7ft for it. was thinking like maybe a 8 to 9 foot med heavy action but like I said correct me if I'm wrong...

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
either an uglystick or an 8' tsunnami surf rod, these were my first two before I got into customs
-
Re: PENN Fierce 6000
thats exactly the two I was looking at as far as durability witch of the two would be better in your opinion? I know custom would be best but the guy up here that builds cutoms has a month waiting and will be down there monday.

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
Buy this model of ugly stik:
Model: BWS 1100 80
Pieces: 2
Line Weight: 10-25 lbs.
Lure Weight: 3/4-3 oz.
Guides: 5+Tip
They sell them at Walmart for around $45. If you want a more expensive rod, go to J&M.

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
+1 the ugly stick has more power

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
though it is heavier weight-wise :-\

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
Just a thought, whats really fun is to spool a 6000 with 12lb test Berkley, you can get a TON of line on it. Or maybe use Ande. Both have exceptional strength at that diameter and it makes a 15lb King feel like a Mack Truck...... I started out using 20lb and 17lb on my Penn reels but now I think the largest I use is 15lb. I don't know, I just like using the lightest line possible so it's more of a "battle" between me and the fish and not just reeling it in. Yes I do lose a few fish that way, but it's my fault for over doing it either with drag or line tension. I have a 5000 that is spooled with 10lb and it's a blast to use for Spanish.
:headbang: fish on dude,,,,,

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
I caught a 32 lber on 6 last year.. Line capacity is far more important than breaking strength.. It starts getting real squirrely with 4 lb..

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
I'm a big fan of Ugly Stik Tiger rods for both kayak and the pier. I have a Battle 6000 on a 7' Tiger medium action rated for 20-50 that I love as an all around rod. It's currently spooled with 15# Big Game for trolling the beaches for kings.

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
For a standard rod ive found a bunch of shimano saragosa rods ive been selling them for $35 and i had 3 fixed up for me with the large eyes that works real well

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
15lb ande back country is my favorite for king, exept on my penn710, i like backcountry 8-10lb for that

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
I will most likely get ugly stick for this trip down and wait till I get down there and get some line from j&m
-
Re: PENN Fierce 6000
If your gonna wait on the line why don't you wait and look at the rods at J&M also? Just a thought.

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
John has Ugly Stiks at J&M, as well as the other good stuff---you can check it all out and compare side by side and not, maybe later, wish you'd made another choice. I'm one of the world's worst to buy cheap, then later wish I'd gone ahead and spent the little extra on better quality.

Me too. But, at least for me, Ugly Stik has been one of the rare exceptions to the rule. There is a reason they've been a best seller since 1976

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
that's my thoughts about an ugly stick also. Even if I decide to go with a better custom rod later for the PENN, I will still use the ugly stick on another setup. they maybe heavy but I've yet to have one fail on me on any of the setups that I've ever owned.

same here, there are few rods that I will fish regularly that I haven't built, and my little ugly stick that I use for spanish is one of them

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
Does j&m carry 8ft ugly sticks cause the walmart up here only carries up to 7ft. They have berkley big game 8ft heavy action rod up here, but feels very cheaply made so I passed on it, and I'm going to wait and look for a rod while I'm down there to match up to my PENN.

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
shoot john g. a pm, I think so, but I'm not sure

Re: PENN Fierce 6000
They had Ugly Stiks up to 9' last year and feel pretty sure they still do. I like my old Uglys but J & M has just about anything you can think of in the way of rods for any budget.
You can find Ugly Stiks most anywhere, but J & M has one heck of an inventory of rods. :headbang:
