I got a new Spinfisher 5500, after casting, turning the handle to flip the bail is hard to turn. Will this loosen and get smoother or does something need adjusting?
If you flip the bail by hand does the spring take over and flip the bail or do you have to flip it most of the way yourself? The spring should take over about when the bail gets parallel with the rod (as opposed to 90 degrees perpendicular when closed). But after it is parallel with the rod it should snap closed on its own quite freely.
At least that's the way my Penns work when they are in good shape.
When you close the bail by turning the handle you are opposing the same spring for the first few degrees.
One of the worst things you can do with most of the 'newer' spinning reels is close the bail by turning the handle.
Not only does it increase wear on the bail spring, but IF you are using monofilament line it creates twist in the line each time you do that.
Instead, close the bail by hand ;-)
My Spinfisher 5500 behaves that way also. As said best to close the bail manually.Quote:
