Soooo we're coming down mid-April amd staying at the Perdido Grand. I'm hitting the pier during the mornings but will have "social duties" later in the day unless my crying gets me out of the condo. Any suggestions on what I could catch around there?
See y'all in a few weeks unless I can be released for another day trip beforehand.
So are we talking THE PIER or a dock at your condo? If your taling about the pier, there is a chart on here somewhere with species around during April. Of course part of what you catch will depend on where and how you fish. I'm a freshwater bass fisherman so I use a lot of topwater poppers and jerkbaits anywhere I get structure changes like the jetty, little lagoon pass, and even the surf. If you're more of a "catfisherman" I'd have to say whatever eats shrimp on a bottom rig is a good place to start. Either way, you'll be catching something with fins while walking around in the sand so I envy you.

At the condo, in the evenings and into dark drag a 1/4 oz jig head with a 2 or 3 or 4 inch gulp on it along the bottom. Size will be determined by bait in water. i like white 2 inch new penny 3 or 4. Make it do a small hop hop pause motion like a slow topwater but on bottom, pausing frequently. Maybe a feather teaser about a foot or 18 inches above that. Like a crappie jig but without the leadhead and with a proper hook not that floppy gold garbage.A #4 would be good.
You will get whatever is around at that time/tide. Most likely would be flounder(you will think you are hungup, set hook ), maybe ground mullet/whiting/gulf kingfish whatever you want to call them.
I get Spanish in the mornings all the way back into there up to the bridge by Ono island depending or around the boat ramps.But they like live LY's/pogies etc.I got a few on lures by accident.
I have caught those inshore style barracudas around there during hot water conditions, big black and red drum from rats on up. Lots of flat fish at times like stingray(please let them go they clean up the bottom, just roll them on their back and they are safe to handle). Mangrove's/Black snapper if the water is right.
You are next to the bridge and that has some good evening fishing at times.
Take your fly rod and wade along the grass edge towards that bridge to Ono, small surface poppers gets a few fish at times but fly is hit or miss-more miss around there. Or a slow sinker on outgoing along the sand from bridge next to condo down to mouth of pass, but fly is slow down there.
As far as after dark is concerned, the specks usually don't start until after 10:00. They are active under lights. Be very, very, quiet.
