Hello guys I'm about to be at Pheonix on the Bay in Orange Beach at about 1 pm today and will be staying for a week. We are supposed to go deep sea fishing Friday but I noticed Pheonix on the bay has a fishing pier and have a few questions.
1. Would the pier at Pheonix on the Bay be a good place to fish?
2. What type of fish should I target?
3. Would it be better to fish off the bank anywhere else or on another pier?
4. What type of bait or tackle should I get?

I have not had a boat to fish there for a couple of years but, I have caught Sheep there around the piers. Lots of current when it is flowing so be careful.
Welcome to the Forum, Captain, It's a great place to be and very educational at times (lol). The Sheepies like to hang around under the bridge going over Perdido Bay and you will be looking right it. It is an easy place to fish but you will have to be sneaky in order to catch one. They do see a lot of hooks and they have a tendency to be hook shy. There is also miles of shoreline and of course the State Park Pier. Good Luck & Tight Lines.
I spent years at a dock not more than a hundred yards from where you are talking about and never caught much of anything---the best was a big sting ray one summer and a few jack crevalle when they invaded the bay in late summer. However, I did get some fine catches of blue crab. I'd suggest fishing the surf at one of the public beaches or go to the Gulf Shores State Pier.

From a pier, including the state park pier, a medium to heavy bass rig (spinning probably best) would be fine. There will be days when the fish along the beach will be near your feet and days when they are out of range no matter what cannon you fire. Look for "underwater ditches" of deeper water, perhaps the second cut out from the beach.
Fresh dead or live shrimp cut into finger-nail size chunks on a carolina rig will be quite sufficient if fish are present.
