i need help learning what i need?i have two penn battles 6000s setup with 16/340 yards for kings.and a penn fierce 40000 for blues and spanish.and a e40 okuma for a backup.what size reels do you need for jacks and cobia.plus i eventually want to bring my skiff down for some bay fishing.i heard theres tarpon and trout and reds.i cant afford the very best.but i want to be properly prepared for what i may run into?any advice on equipment would be greatly appreciated???

I have a battle 7000 with 16/370 on a custom king rod and have no problem catching and landing anything on the pier. Im learning more and more every time I lose a fish. I think what you have is plenty for our pier. It's more on the skills then the equipment. There's a couple of guys here that landed 35+ lb king on ultralight gears. Now that's impressive.
Viking guy used a ultra light shimano clarus 5' rod and landed a 38.5 lb king On 8 lb line, he used a penn fierce 5000 but it was just for the line capacity. I guess that is not ultralight gear all the way but still impressive.

10-4 Duck.Charles,the 6000's will serve you fine for most all of the fishing on our pier with the exception of sight fishing for cobia during the spring.Just remember this when spending your money on gear.There are a dozen or so cobia caught a year on the pier verses thousands and thousands of kings.

you guys are hilarious.from what i've seen,youre all pretty damn good.but now,i do have a couple of "crappie"setups i could bring down.now,thats ul.and ya'll can see ,who lands the first king.i appreciate ya'lls advice.i understand now.its more in technic than top equipment.i didnt know,that so few cobia are caught off the pier..

Rather than just delete this entire thread and the legitimate comments, I decided to pull the weeds and put the thread back up.
There is no sense in all the drama that played out in this thread by a member wanting information about fishing equipment. THERE ARE SOAP OPERAS AND DR. PHIL on TV every weekday afternoon if that is your thing.
If you desire to piss on each other’s leg, then do it with PMs (Personal Messages) or via Email.
There are a lot of members who don’t appreciate having to dig thru a bunch of useless dribble to get to the stuff that matters.
People who feel the need to belittle fellow members, brag of their own superiority, or just crap on everything; should find another place to pontificate, such as Sound Off in the Press Register or maybe one of the hundreds of other forums out there on the internet.
