    Prepare for conditions!

You all remember to hydrate and stay out of the mid-day sun. Use at least 50 SPF sunscreen, wear a hat and get yourself something to drink. Don't stay too long! Heat exhaustion is debilitating, and heat stroke is life threatening. If you're feeling bad - Tell somebody! Also, if there are storm clouds with lighting in the distance - Leave the pier. The cloud doesn't have to be directly overhead to strike you with lightning.

Remind yourself that on the pier you are on the highest point for hundreds of yards, grounded, and holding up a graphite lightning rod of maybe 9'.

Old fisherman's tale (are there are enough truth qualifiers in that intro?): guy is surf fishing standing in the ocean; storm arrives, and he decided to leave when the static in the air makes his line hover above the water. Where I read this, several commenters said "yeah that's happened to me, too." I'd not need something out of a movie to get me out of target zone, even if the fish were really, really biting.

A cooling trick I learned in my fishing club is to wet a washrag (or two) and put it in a quart ziplock bag to keep in your cooler with cold drinks. IF you feel hot, take one out to wipe your face and back of your neck. Then place it back in the ziplock to use again later if needed.

another thing that works great is a small spritz bottle of ice water. I used it on offshore charters a few times and had people asking me if they get a few shots from it.
