You really can't go wrong with those choices so get what you'll have confidence in I use Penn 4500SS as well as 5500SS and also Battle 4000 and 5000 and all work fine I'm a strong advocate of at least two rods though One for Kings reds Jacks etc and one for spanish blues etc I use Penn Pursuit II s Penn 4500SS and Battle 4000 for spanish etc and Penn Battle 5000 for Kings and larger fish
Use whichever you find more fun, the choice will not impact what you land at the pier in my opinion (assuming similar sized reels).
I have penn captiva 4000 & 6000 now, but know they won't hold up to much pressure or sand. What will last is my question...
Personally I don't care to fish with ANY reel model with holes on the beach.
IMHO it just increases the maintenance by letting more sand get in.
Let's see I've used Penn 4500SS 5500s and 7500s for over 40 yrs Caught 18-20 Lb Blue Fish on every cast at Cape Hatteras North Carolina as well as 25-30 lb what we called Channel Bass as well and picked up 4-5 lb Speckle Trout and Flounder in a bushel off the beach that ran up there to get away from the Blue Fish and never had a problem with them Don't make like they use too so doubt you can expect this unless you can find these but take care of your equipment and it should last for years
I love my battles, I have a 3000,4000,and 5000 had no problems out of any of them. even use the 3000and 4000 to bass fish with and with 20 pound braid you can catch most anything on pier with the 4000 model
What are some of your favorite models for surf fishing? I have recently started getting into it and am thinking about grabbing a new combo or two. I am not well educated on that subset of tackle... I know you can get sealed, submersible reels like the Stella, Torque, etc but is there something cheaper than that but still more suited to splashes and sand than your average reel?
I read that it isn't actually water-tight and cannot perform at its advertised capabilities without damage, but does have some redeeming qualities... not enough to get me interested though Penn Spinfisher V - AlanHawk.com
I found an answer to my own question about the SpinfisherV
A quote from a PENN rep on another forum:
"Country of Origin – this reel is made overseas, if it was built in the US it would cost well over $300 retail. We are committed to building product in the US as we have shown through new product introductions over the past couple years, but to remain competitive in this industry overseas manufacturing is a necessity at certain price points. We are commited to building a quality proudct overseas by choosing the correct partners and investing heavily in quality control."
Does this steer my decision....probably, but maybe not.
He also touted the added design features of the Conquer series and that they justified the higher price.
Yeah, the Spinfisher V isn't perfect but it's probably the best Penn makes for that kind of duty.
It's sealed better than most and has a solid spool to turn sand and water away.
For half the money, I like the BPS Offshore Angler Inshore Extreme.
It's lighter being mostly aluminum (but with a stainless main shaft) based on the U.S. Reels
And if it had an HT-100 drag system it would be even better IMHO!
If you wait a few weeks Penn is coming out with a new spinner. The Clash. https://www.youtube.com/user/PENNfishing Looks to be a pretty sweet reel.
