Re-packaging frozen cigs
I want to repack a box of cigs in small quantity quart freezer bags - 10 or so to a bag that I can take out of the freezer only as many as needed. What effect will thawing them just enough to separate them and then re-freezing them in the bags have on them? Also, should I dry freeze them or fill the bags with water?

Re: Re-packaging frozen cigs
You may not have to thaw them at all. If they are decent quality, you can break them up by pounding the package on concrete and they will break apart quite nicely unless they have a lot of water in with them. I just finished breaking up a couple of boxes from J&M that way. They probably won't fit in quart ziplocs---I have to use gallon.

::) Thanks. Didn't even think about that. 10 of the white box cigs fill a qt freezer bag about 3/4 full. Right nice stackable.
Do you fill the bags with water or leave them dry?

Re: Re-packaging frozen cigs
[font=comic sans ms][size=12pt]When you drop a block of frozen cigs on the garage floor, make sure they are in plastic garbage bag ore something that will keep them from going all over the garage.
If you lose one, it will tell you where it is in a few days. :puke:

Something uniquely evil about the smell of rotting fish.

Re: Re-packaging frozen cigs
Do like George said but do it as needed because they will last much longer when frozen in a block and do not add water.

Re: Re-packaging frozen cigs
John's right as always, that how I used to do mine. I would keep a few boxes in the freezer at the beginning of the season, and maybe bust one, and have bags of 5, 10, 20. That way depending on how long I had to go fish, I would only bring what I thought I would need. Its tough though to leave when the bite is good, but man do I miss getting to go all the time, and all the good friends out there.

Never know where the road will lead you. That's about the only thing that is certain in traveling life's highway. Keep the faith. The call of Mother Pier is strong, grasshopper.
Words of wisdom for today. ::)

Re: Re-packaging frozen cigs
I have posted this several times over the years and will post it several more because it works. The key to making thawed minnows last is keeping them dry and not sitting in water getting soggy. Here's what I do with my thawed cigs if I plan on fishing within the next few days. Use a small glass baking dish and put some type of grate in the bottom of it so the bait won't be sitting in water,I cut up a plastic dish drainer that you use in a sink.Note that both of these things are not made of metal. Place your leftover cigs belly-up and dowse them with Bionic Brine or Kosher salt and place in the fridge uncovered. The salt will toughen the bellies and by leaving them uncovered, the moisture will be drawn. The next they will be a little tougher, day two they are as good as they will get and by day three the eyes will have receded into the head a they start to deteriorate. Give it a try,you won't be sorry. And keep them dry when you take them fishing.

And just how pi$$ed off is the old lady gonna be when the fridge starts stinking?

Re: Re-packaging frozen cigs
Baking soda in BB keeps the odor down and acts as a preservative.

[font=comic sans ms][size=12pt]This advice came from a man who I have seen eat the head off a cigar minnow. Besides, he has a fridge at the store to keep ‘em in. :poke1:

Ahh. Thanks
Does it have baking soda in it or do you have to add it?

Re: Re-packaging frozen cigs
It has everything you need in a bait preservative

Re: Re-packaging frozen cigs
Salt Curing them like John said works the best. I did this last year when dad and I were just coming down on the weekends. It really does make a difference.

Re: Re-packaging frozen cigs
Being a long ways from the pier, I used the johng method and then froze them after immersing the ziplock bag to squeeze air out. Where normally the cigs wouldn't hold up to refreezing, the salt toughened them and the freezer stopped the shrivelling. Used some the other day to catch king that were done last fall.

Re: Re-packaging frozen cigs
Doesn't BB have a UV brightener added?

Re: Re-packaging frozen cigs
Just don't bite the cigs off of your hook in order to keep your hands from getting yucky because the brine label says "not safe for human consumption"....
