I have a question?
Has there ever been any Red Snapper caught off the pier?
Yes but never seen a real big one and all were out of season.
Yep, what Tato said.
Much more likely to catch a keeper grey snapper.
Welcome to the Forum, Bob, You get up early!
Yes, three or four years ago, on the last day of snapper season, one of the regulars (James or Jimbo) caught one over ten pounds. I saw it a few minutes after he caught it. There have been a number of good sized ones hooked, but they dive right into the barnacles and cut your line.
Caught this one this past Sunday.
Didn't measure before throwing back but it was close to 16 inches.

Fiver, you also didn't identify the species before throwing it back. That surely looks to be a mangrove snapper, aka grey snapper.
Looks too red to be a mango.
That is what happens to mangrove snapper when they start getting some size to them, get darker red. I consider them to be the most intelligent fish I've caught and capable of learning to a degree. When and if this fish is caught again it will most likely be two feet long and the color of a wet red brick.
If it was a red snapper, you would see white on the bottom. Which makes their red appear pink. No white or pink, not a RS.
The guy from Indiana has a question that may be silly.........
Any chance its a Mutton Snapper?
Travis, it's definitely not a mutton. Not a bad guess, the shape and overall coloration are almost identical. If it had a single dark spot on its side it would have been.
I disagree. The elongated pectoral fin and pointed anal fin are characteristics of red snapper. Mangroves have rounded anal fins, and shorter pectoral fins. Here is a clearer picture.

When i google Google red snapper vs. Mangrove snapper one of the first results is a pdf with a side by side comparison.

Edit - the resolution of both pictures is degrading when i upload but I have a clearer image on my phone that allows you to see the pectoral and anal fins clearly.
There were several juvenile red snapper caught Sunday, a couple of which still had the dark spot on the side.
Red snapper
That photo shows a Lutjanus Campechanus, no doubt, no question in my mind. Red snapper. Haywire has spoken---thus it shall be.
So say we all?
So say we all.
Were fishing in the keys years ago and my buddy caught a mangrove pushing 18 in. Biggest that I've seen personally. I fish for them quite a bit here in AL and have never had anything close. Like chillinfish, I have a hard time weeding through the 11 inchers..
Back when I had a big boat, we caught them like Pierboy just posted on a regular basis. My best was 8#.
Years ago, fishing with Mike Thierry on the Lady Ann, we caught a mangrove that weighed 13 lbs, Mike got all excited and we iced it in a fish bag, weighed 12 lbs 4 oz at DI Marina when we got back in. We were AJ fishing at the time.
