Red Tide in Alabama...

no, not the football team upstate, this just might be the real deal folks...

FB message from Bill Walton, Auburn Shellfish Lab yesterday, October 15, 2018As of this afternoon, the Alabama Department of Public health and ADEM reported concentrations of Karenia brevis (red tide) of 3,900 and 4,000 cells per liter at Alabama Point and Gulf State Park Pavillion, respectively.
While any product harvested currently is safe, shellfish harvest in Alabama will be closed as soon as any station goes above 5,000 cells per liter. ADPH will be sampling later this week. Everyone should be aware that a closure may immediately follow the analysis of those samples.



For areas 1, 2 and 3, ADPH has collected water samples and expect the results on Wednesday.

Note that concentrations of Karenia brevis (red tide) at this rte are considered "Very Low" , but could possibly cause some breathing difficulties.

Hopefully, that will not happen as we are forecast to get two stronger cold fronts come through by the end of this weekend...

Oh no! This is not good news.

Good news today from ADEM: "The retesting showed the small patch of Karenia brevis detected earlier has dissipated or moved away."
They said they will continue to test the coastal sites on Mondays and Wednesdays for the next few weeks. WHEW!
