reds
last year I came down to the pier, and the redfish were going crazy and coming in huge schools where everyone hooked up. I was wondering what that was called, and why it happens. Also does this happen every year at a certain time, if so when is this? That was the most fun ive ever had at the pier, and i want to come again when this happens! 8)

Re: reds
Its called "fun"!
Why does it happen? Well, bull reds tend to occur in big schools of similar size fish. They cruise around looking for schools of pogies and mullet to feed on. Sometime they happen to come by the Pier and then all hell breaks loose.

It's called a "blitz" and it happens occasionally when a large school of predatory fish meets up with a large school of forage fish.
Here's a good definition in fishermans' terms @ http://www.wmi.org/saltfish/saltboar...hing/t6214.htm
A redfish blitz can occur most any time of the year but seem to be most probable in the spring and fall when schools of baitfish collect around the pier.
Blitzes often seem to occur several days in row on the pier but the time is not easy to pin down.
Hope this helps and you get to experience it again! :yay:

Re: reds
I've yet to catch a jack or a cobia, did manage a couple kings last year and they were a hell of a fight. Caught some big AJs and mahi offshore and they were really fun. Hopefully I will get to catch a jack crevalle or a cobia this year, don't know if i have the proper reel for either one yet, (Penn Fierce 6000 and just got a Penn Battle 7000) and got a custom 8' rod from J&M, but we'll see. :headbang:

Re: reds
I'd want the Battle over the Fierce on a feisty Jack or Ling.
Of course the Fierce upgraded with HT-100s should get the job done too.
I love watching a Jack eat my lure/bait, I know I've a tug-a-war at hand then. :fishing:
