Reel Replacement
So my trusty Bass Pro reel seems to have bit the dust. I'm not surprised, with the abuse that I have given it over the years. I'm looking at replacing it with a Penn Battle reel, but I can't determine which size would be comparable. I think it might be around a 3000. What say you gods among men of pier fishing?

Based on line capacities, I'd say it would be the 5000
The reel in the pics shows 12/215, 16/155, 20/??
Battle II 5000 (BTLII5000) shows 12/225, 15/200, 20/135

I was thinking that, but I've got a 6500 Spinfisher that absolutely dwarfs that BP reel. Do the ratings have anything to do with actual physical size, or is more line capacity and drag rating?

You have a 40......so something the same, depending on species targeting......?

Anything from specks, flounder, & small reds to throwing a sabiki for bait. It's sort of an all purpose combo since I have limited room when driving down from Memphis.

Anything that says 40,4000.....that is my favorite size for spainsh if loaded with braid with top shot of mono should handle mid size kings.....spend the extra $ and get a little better reel.....I like the stradic's.....but the penn battles are good to for the $......battle 4000 will be a good all around medium size reel set up for braid if you so desire......they have a area on the spool, made for braid

+1 on what Bill said. Can't go wrong with Penn.

The Stradics look amazing but are definitely out of my budget. After doing a little reading though, the Spinfisher 3500 might be worth the extra coin. Being that it's sealed, and I'll use this rod for kayak fishing as well, it might be the ticket.

While you are shopping it might be a good idea to think about available features. Line capacity and sealing have been discussed. Other features like price, drag material, ease of maintenance, braid ready, 2nd drag (LL in Penn reels) might come into the equation. When I purchased a Penn SSV4500LL it was after all the different features where considered. That reel work wonderful for how and what I fish (pier, strippers and catfish). Of coarse since then newer reel are out that might have changed .
At ICAST2016 a new Penn Slammer III was shown. It looks like it has the features to make my short list in the future. With you using it on a kayak it might deserve a look.

I had just went ahead and pulled the plug on a SSV4500 when I saw your post. I'll take a look at those! We all know that the correct number of rods and reels you should own is N+1, where N is the number you currently own!
