Could I get by using a freshwater reel on the pier.
Sure just make it a practice to wash it out with fresh water. I generally don't wash mine till I get ready to come home and that is probably after about a weeks fishing. You also need to make sure you don't put any wet lures or hooks back in your tackle box will rust up everything. Wash your rods as well getting all the eyes washed good.
Yes. Just wash them (and the rods) with soapy water & rinse.
I rinse mine daily with fresh water on the pier.....has served me well for 25+ years
A good rinse down with fresh water is all thats needed, Just don't go all power wash on your gear. You don't want push any salt and sand
into the reel with a hi pressure stream of water, just lite rinsing.
I'm somewhat OCD when it comes to clean up, After the rinse I spray with "PENN, reel and rod cleaner",Then wipe them down with a cloth
as I pack the car . Or "Salt-a-way" works too
I know everyone else washes theirs with fresh water, but I do mine about twice a year and haven't had a problem in 45 years... I suppose it's a good idea though to be on the safe side.
Less is mo betta ;-)
Definitely not high pressure
Thanks guys
I spray my cheap Chinese reels with Real Magic and allow them to dry before using them in saltwater. Rinse them at the end of the day gently with water from the hose at the pier or condo. I avoid soap because I feel that it dissolves the reel's petroleum based lubricants. I am still using reels that I bought 6 or 7 years ago including a few that have been submerged in the surf several times. I try to avoid it but sometimes it can't be helped if you wade-swim out to the sandbar to get past the tourists.
