Rigging Looney Jigs
I've got a lot of good info so far, but I had another question. Several suggested using Looney Jigs for Spanish Mackerel. So I ordered the looney jigs but I am having trouble finding info on how to rig them up. I've read that most use fairly light weight line / rod / reel. Can someone explain explain how to rig them? What size line, any leader, weight of leader, etc. Sorry for the rookie questions.

I use 10# or 12# mono with a 40# mono leader, no swivel. Some like 10 or 15# Sevenstrand leader.
Either way, the Spaniards destroy leaders quickly. :pirate
Heavier wire will last all day, but that's only because of no hits.

I use 50 to 60lb mono leader about 18inches long tied uni to uni to the main line...I use a polamar knot at the jig, some use a non-slip loop knot so the jig hangs freer
I should also add...... I make my own, so I have pennies in them and doesn't bother me when lost....If I had to buy them, I would most likely use light steel leader 10-12lb seven stand....but they twist the heck out of it too ....seems I get more strikes on the mono....but who really knows for sure
