If you would like a 2 piece rod I can build one without a problem. Only thing is with two piece rods it your limited on the selection of blanks and actions that are offered. I will say this, my favorite king rod is actually a two piece and works great.
I have traveled with long one piece rods in some mighty small vehicles, safely and comfortably. Before you totally nix the idea of a one piece rod, tell us more about what you consider limited travel space. What are you rolling in? What other gear, luggage and passengers are along for the ride and where will it/they be situated?
I gonna be rolling around in my wifes Kia sportage due to gas prices and considering I'm coming in from northeast Arkansas I don't know if 1pc will work
[size=12pt]I drive a midsize SUV and made a rack in the cargo area level with the dash and I can put a 9’ rod in with a couple inches to spare.

Great idea fin that might just work and thanks for the help
I've been using the same two piece fiberglass rod for kings since 1984. I like it, it works for me.
Commercial two piece rods are out there, they wont have the feel or action of the rods they make at J&M, but they will work. If you got the $$, have John build you one.
If you're by yourself just lay down the passenger seat put the butt of your rod on the floorboard and you could probably fit a 10' rod in something the size of your wife's KIA.
Thanks DRH but it's gonna be me n 2 women n their luggage for 8 days. Tight quarters Fo Sho
Carl your right probably what I'm gonna do is have someone build one for me
Penn actually makes a pretty decent one for a fair price. Check out the 8-9ft spinfisher rods. All are 2 piece. Seastriker, and daiwa also make some decent. Look at surf rods around the 12-20# class 7-9ft. Med-fast action.
Another alternative in that case, every KIA Sportage I can recall seeing has a luggage rack on it. Make a storage tube out of some thin wall PVC and mount it to the rack. You could also just wrap the rod with rags at any contact point and tie it off directly to the rack.
for the trip down in our explorer.... when we came in it....my rod tube was put on the rack for the travel.....up to 9ft,now....just added another hole for the seeker rod....now everything is inside the old van....maybe the last trip for it :boohoo:

We travel in a Camry and there is 3 of us, my daughter is still in a car seat but I have one of the rods you.talk about from J&M. I take.the reel off and slide the rod between the passenger seat and door fits perfectly you just have to be careful getting in and out on that side. I hope this helps.
Thanks guys for all the suggestion. Ya'll have been a bunch of help
Take a piece of scrap something such as 3/4''PVC pipe, start out with a piece around 8' and see if it fits.If not cut a couple inches off and keep cutting till it fits in the area you want it to be then have a rod built that length. As long as you can have room for a rod a little over 7' you will be happy unless its windy. My favorite rod is 7'4,my sons,7'1 and the old Fenwick Pacific stick(I think that's what it is)that #'r has been using the last 25 years is around 7'. If Ya know how to cast,a shorter rod will do you just fine.
john g i know you said that the custom rods you stock are 7'9" and i think i can handle that in my ride. so my question is if i decide thats what i want what would be a smarter decision should i call j&m and buy know or should i just wait till i come down in may to buy one. i know you have some left in stock i think you said 25 or so i just dont know how long they will last?

I love my 7ft something king rod.....I can't quite cast as far as some(might be because using 20lb test line too),but it serves me well and fits good in my hand....I am excited to fish with the one I got from Obie last spring..... after our return home....just wish it would take a little bigger reel foot....but too late now(finally got the 306 in it decent)....he said I can't break it on a fish(CUI blank)....we'll see
Do not order one,I put one in the back for you.If it fits great, but if not you can fish it for the time you are down and we will build you one that will.
^^ John we the commuters to the area love you just saying!!!!
thank you sir i would definitely appreciate that. ill be down around the 20th of may ill be in to see ya.
FWIW. I picked up one of these rods today and put the butt down in the passenger side floorboard (cluttered) of my 2010 Nissan Frontier extra-cab and the tip was in the opposite corner behind me, just barely touching the headliner. I have no doubt you'll find a spot for one in your Sportage.
thanks for the all the help drh think i have it figured out

You can never have to many fishing rods! I'm building two that are going to customers in Colorado, everytime I build one for somebody I always want to build one for myself haha :fishing:
Jake, you have no clue how many rods I have built for myself while doing ones for customers.
It's hard to make money if you keep building stuff for your self,I only own two.
