I noticed a few weeks ago that the sharks didn't seem to overly interested in the sheepshead carcasses. There was a couple of days that the water was so clear you could see several laying on the bottom by the cleaning stations.

Ive noticed that too chillinfish but I'm not sure why that is
As Pier#R said "feed them and they will come" Maybe we could make a game out of getting your fish sharked at the pier. We could score and see who wins. If your hooked up to a fish and get it over the rail that's a point for you. If a shark gets it the sharks get a point. If you leave the pier with more points than the sharks you won. Go fishing at the pier with a positive attitude knowing that you can defeat the sharks. They are going to be there, so just go fishing, relax and have fun with it. Might even get a score board put up, Sharks vs Fisherman.
Yeah, a pier out to the pyramid/reefs! And some ride-on pier carts, lol.
Biggest difference is lots of sharks were killed on the old pier and we can't kill them on the new. If you go to any other pier on the gulf coast you do not have this problem because you can harvest sharks on them. That are smart critters they know they are not in danger and that there is plenty of food around but if we were allowed to harvest sharks within a year or two you would see a huge difference.
... I'm afraid not.
Pensacola does not allow shark fishing either.
The biggest difference over there is Florida piers do NOT allow fish cleaning on the pier(i.e. throwing carcasses overboard to attract sharks).
It's the elephant in the room (or on the pier) as it were.
I'm gonna take some Alka Seltzer tablets and stick them in the Spanish carcasses, then watch the sharks swell up and come to the top. Could be fun.
What kinds of sharks are typically out there? Mostly Bulls and blacktips?
Alabama does not allow you to clean your fish on the beach and throw the carcass back into the gulf because they don't want sharks to congregate around the beaches.. But they allow hundreds of pounds of fish to be cleaned on the pier and the carcasses to be thrown into the gulf. As long as that's allowed sharks are going to congregate around the pier for an easy meal of both fish you have hooked and the carcasses you throw over the rail. Solution, Bring a garbage bag to the pier with you and when you clean your fish take the carcasses home and dispose of them there. Why blame the sharks for a problem we are causing?
