Hey guys, ive been fishing for about 8 months so im really new and im going to be at dauphin island for saturday and was wandering with the high being 62 do you think the sheepshesd will be in around the jetties are is it still to early and what about redfish Thanks :)
or i could go to gulf shores pierbwhich would be better?
I dont know about sheeps head but im sure theres some red fish and whiting around. Please post a report so we know if u did any good. :)
Dauphin Island is likely a better bet than GSPPier this time of year (unless you like coffee & donuts ;-)
The water has gotten a bit saltier (clearer) in the lower bay now and the East End jetties may well be holding some sheeps and redfish.
But the tides will be strong this weekend and that will likely muddy the water around the jetties, so you may have to hunt around to find them.

Just wondering if anybody may have talked to someone that may have been out boat fishing around the fish attractors they put off shore out from the pier.Curious to find out if that's why the sheepshead are not coming to the pier.
I don't know how sheepshead or most other fish decide where to go.... But there was some discussion last year I think about how many were caught during Jan Feb and March, the year before they put in the 10 creel limit rule.
There were over 100 sheepshead a day caught for most all of those 3 months. And I mean EVERY DAY, not just weekends. I think we guessed at 4000 to 6000 were caught, SO, thats what happened to than many of them..... And then we guessed at how many live shrimp John G sold to catch that many sheepshead!!! LOL
Seems like I remember there were a lot caught year before last also around the pier especially around the Christmas holidays.
Yes I agree about the year before last. The sheeps were literally up for slaughter. EVERYONE was catching in March.Quote:

Last year the sheepshead were wrapping up the pier, but absolutely would not bite. You could see them swimming around your bait in large schools, causing a plethora of new cuss words to be invented. I think it was nearly mid March before they started biting with any dependability.

I'm not pier#r, but I'll give you my perspective about artificials. If you're fishing for sheepshead, use only live bait - shrimp, fiddler crabs (I use two to help hide the hook), or ghost shrimp. Don't use artificials. It has to do with the way a sheepshead feeds, which is closely inspecting barnacles before chomping down on live prey (crustaceans/mollusks) hiding in them.Quote:

If you cant find live shrimp down at DI, walk the shoreline and pick up hermit crabs. Crack em open with a hammer and pull them out. Great sheepshead bait. I'm sure reds will eat them too.
+1 on the hermit crabs, Jemison's usually carries them by now (873-4695)
The Gulp shrimp will probably work better for the reds but you will need to fish them close to the rocks (you will loose a few).
Live shrimp will be the best bet for redfish and even trout or flounder if they are around.
Thanks everyone and I won't be able to get there till about 1030 and I'm hoping for some live shrimp and I will use the gulp some too I'll let y'all know how I do :) and gulp shrimp run them close to the Jerry rocks that stick out into the water or the ones close to the shore or both sorry I'm a total newbie
Have to say it was fun about 10 people out there. And no fish was caught I had fresh dead shrimp on a popping cork against the jetties and that small pier before the jetties with no luck and also used some gulp with no luck stayed from about 10 to 6 just wasn't biting
I'm using a popping cork when fish are surfacing and pushing bait up. They'll respond to the commotion and grab the live bait, as long as it is presented as a natural part of that feeding scenario. Around jetty-rocks, I'm fishing out and down and that would usually mean getting hung up in the rocks on the bottom if I'm not fishing from a boat and fishing vertically. So that means using a jig head with a paddle-tail swimbait and trying to keep it near the bottom. But that's only if I'm fishing from the jetty or around rocks. I've knocked 'em dead before in mid - late February off the pier with fresh mullet chunks fished smack-dab on the bottom. Unless there's a lot of current, you don't need a whole lot of weight. Just fling it as far South as you can and hold on. I haven't done that in years, though, because I'm more protective of my health. Standing in the cold for hours just doesn't hold the appeal to me that it used to!Quote:

Yeah Haywire,i used to fish the old dauphin isl. pier for years and they would show up in massive schools early march. It took a while to figure out that when they did this they were only interested in the mating dance. Once they stopped chasing each other and swimming near the surface,like clockwork they bit agressively!! You would think they were gone because we stopped seeing them,but they were on the bottom and around the pilings. Often when we hooked one 2-3 would follow the hooked fish to the top.
