I have 12 lb flouro leader, didn't know if I should drop down to 6 ,8 10 or just use the 12. Also I did do a search but really found more on hook size then line.

When the bite is hot, I used a 15lb mono leader one time and they didn't care. Last year sucked, I couldn't trick them to eating at all.
Generally I'd say yes.
Unless they are chummed up, spawn struck and blinded by luv ;-)
Grandpa,
i agree with Pier#r. I will use 15 lb mono when the bite is hot, but that's not always the case. When they're more fussy, they are definitely line shy and I'll switch to 14# fluorocarbon. Knowing #r, he would always like to go with lighter line, but I have trouble with anything lighter fishing around those pilings and hoarding the convicts out from behind them
If the water is clear, definitely.
Which why I like fishing for them in late summer around the Bayway bridges up here, dingy water makes them less suspicious.
Depending of wind and current, I will use just my 6# mainline and a hook with just a little splits of on the line to get the bait down a bit. If it windier or more current, I don't go over 10# Fluro leader on a Carolina rig.
I've made a lot of people hate me by reducing the strength of my leader and getting bites when they don't. Hey, if they don't ask me what I'm doing, I'm not required to volunteer information. You may lose more fish, but you get more bites.
I also think it's very important to use a tiny hook. You need one anyways to fit in their mouth but I use a tiny treble that is basically hidden when the shrimp is hooked.
Also, don't forget a small swivel and the lightest weight that'll get the job done. I use floro for leader as I believe it disappears better underwater... at least thats what I tell myself.
Yes they are.
George & I were side by side fishing Sheeps one day, he was catching and I wasn't.
I was wondering if I wasn't holding my mouth right, or spitting in the wrong direction... Something was amiss.
I was using 15 or 20# FC, George handed me one of his 10# (IIRC) leaders, and I immediately started catching Sheeps.
George & I killed'em that day, we even had an audience of touristas admiring our fishing prowess.
OK I'm stumped. What is an (IIRC) leader?
