The "slot" to keep a redfish in Alabama is 16" to 26".
But also in Alabama, you can keep one 'oversized' redfish per day.
Keep in mind, most of the time the game warden will 'pinch' the tail to measure a fish...

The creel limit for Red Drum in Alabama is 3, between 16"-26" (slot), however 1 oversize can be kept. Therefore, if you catch a bull Red, you can continue to fish but only for your two remaining slot siz d fish.
If I'm lucky enough to catch a few I are they like most fish where the best eating size would be on the smaller size of the slot. We like to eat fish and would really like to try red fish sometime. Merry Christmas everyone Tony
Like all fish, smaller specimens have denser muscle mass and usually less vascularity that does lend to better flavor IMHO.
However, even the larger ones are quite 'edible'. Just look up fsntime's "poor-mans' lobster" recipe.
I like the upper end slot fish grilled on the half-shell with italian dressing.
To each his own. I hope you get one soon!
