Going to the beach sometime this summer , and I would like to fish for spanish mackerel. I was wondering if I need a leader? I am going to be using gotcha plugs and shrimp.

Yep, you'll need a leader. The "SEARCH" feature on the forum is your best friend when it comes to tackle questions.
Tiny black ss 50lb test swivels, 15# seven strand coffee wire leader, #4 4x treble hook, figure 8 knots.
Yes you will have to use leader they got teeth that will cut right through mono unless you have some really strong mono like 50lb id use a Looney jig for spanish but you can get worn out oh and for the gotcha use small Swivels there are alot of other members that will help ya out and even look back through other threads i seen a thread like this one many times
Sometimes, if they are a bit shy, you will want that 50lb+ mono or fluoro leader. Especially if the water is clear.
plan on loosing some tackle....jigs are way cheaper then the gotcha's and really safer ....at 1.20 a piece verses just under 4.00 ....well you make that choice....might want to try a bubble rig....they are cheap and fun to watch the strike..... cast fare, so the beach would be an option
