Whats the preference on leader for spanish what kind ? and what length ?
25-60# mono or FC, as light as you can get away with without getting cut off constantly.
40# seems to be pretty popular.
Perhaps a light wire leader, but you'll get a lot less strikes with one.
I like mine about 18-24" and generally connect to my mainline with as small a swivel (black) as possible.
i like 40 florou no swivel and white looney jig thats all....
...the biggest recorded "spanish" mackarel was caught in North Carolina weighed somewhere around 8lbs. (alabama has 6.75), although they fight interestingly good, personally, a 12 lb mono line is more than enough, attached to a 16-18" wire cable of about 15-20lbs size weight, and the end with a size 8 or 6 treble hook with a live 3-inch or smaller LY. Other than that, a "suspending" yozuri , 3-4 in long & 1 oz heavy silver/red or silver/blue colored minnow lure can be a game changer, also., gotchas with chrome silver body with red head or "yellow" proved to be effective too..just my 2 cents...
to me the best spanish lures are gotchas (orange head with gold body is the best) bubble rigs (clarkspoon works wonders behind one), if fishin with a small el-y i use 31 pound wire lighter if possible and a number 4 mustad 3x treble hook. also yo-zuris are real good too.
And the largest caught was 13# caught in North Carolina in 1987.
@chilerelleno, thanks for checking..that's just me from where I read somewhere..simple mistake nothing serious...gulf shores pier may still have not caught anything bigger than 7 lbs. somebody can confirm these better..
Checked the Outdoor Alabama website for Record fish looks like they dont update it much.
Well Nvm the Blue Marlin from last year is updated
Best rig:
=> 40 lb. mono leader (about 24" because as soon as I see a fray, I like to retie and I just trim off a little rather than rigging up again).
=> Uni to Uni knot from main line to leader. (i don't recommend a swivel, but if you like them, i go with a black really small 80 lb bill fisher swivel.)
=> My most successful lures are
- Yellow head gotcha (the smaller one) with shiny chrome body (Silver on sunny days and gold on cloudy days)
- White Looney jig or White/Chartreuse jig
- Bubble rig with a piece of small pink rubber sunglasses holder (from wally world) J & M has great pre rigged ones. or a pomano jig ( I absolutely love the bomber pink/ silver chrome head pompano jigs. They last forever.)
- Medium size shallow diver Yo-Zuri crystal minnow (match to the bait in water) Fairly pricey to loose though. ( I use 18" 7-strand 30 lb. wire leader with Yo-Zuris) Anything will come up on a YoYo.
- Last but not least, a Maribu Crappie Jig White tipped with a diamond shaped strip of shiny spanish belly. (this ones very cheap to use and very fun to fish, but you need really light tackle for it) I sometimes tandem rig these jigs.

If I use wire for Spanish, it is an unraveled piece of 90# sevenstrand. The thin, wavy wire is pretty strong, but don't fool around with it when it kinks. Floro is definitely good when the rascals are biting swivels like last fall. Whatever you threw with a swivel you better be ready to lose.
I was using 60 flouro,18-20 inch (so I could tie on a new jig before tying a mono to mono again).... but if they seemed finicky I dropped down to 50...lost some jigs, but at 15 cents a piece, it was fun and a cooler full of frozen fillets....when they finally started hitting good last fall
I just finished powder painting a bunch of spear head jigs, now for the tying ....fun....at least I am not pressed for time yet
ironman172 ... at 15 cents a piece
Hi, I'd like 1,000 please in assorted colors. Will you be in town tomorrow? :)

.these were pic's before my last fall trip, and a lot stayed, I still use some of these here so they don't go to waste , just now prepping for the next trip ....the more I tie the better they seem to look, at least to me....now for getting into some rod repair and trying the eye tying once again....this time with out the audience at J&M laughing in John's office.....at least they got some entertainment that day....I had to quit before costumers came in and thought I might have worked there and walked out http://www.gulfcoastfishingconnectio...isc/giggle.gif
better this way ... pic's.... compliments of Mr. Pier#r
.
PROOF they work just fine Bill ;-)
