If I get cut with heavy mono I go to wire (12#, 18# or 27# Sevenstrand or 20# singlestrand) but usually only about 6", with NO swivel.
And if that gets cut I'll often add about 18" of 30# mono as a shock leader.
Another great alternative bait for spanish and small kings is the 4" soft plastics like Fin-s and Zoom Fluke.
On a 1/4 or 3/8 ounce jig head they are absolute mackerel crack!
Every year I catch most of my best lure caught spanish on this setup.

Another often overlooked lure for (larger) spanish are the 5" diving hard baits like Yozuri and Rapala and Bomber.
But I actually prefer the less expensive store brand versions from Academy and Bass Pro Shops (@ $4-$6).
They dive and suspend, flash and wobble with an action that drives mackerel to try and murder it!
But they often loose that battle ;-)

Nobody uses floro leaders? I watched big Spanish cut thru 60# momoi mono last fall. Never even felt a tug. I like the 90# sevenstrand uncoiled into single wires. They seem to hit that as well as mono or floro.
+1 on the flukes.
Hit a sale on those academy diving baits. Got five for 2.95 each. Can't wait to get down and throw em.
Don't forget the crappie jigs. Caught several on 1/16 oz jig and Bobby Garland soft plastic earlier this spring. The glow in the dark bodies work good in low light or dark.

The top picture that Pier#r posted in this thread is of a Spanish with a loony jig in its mouth. J&M Tackle had some hanging on the wall last time I was in there.
