Zara spook, super spook, or spook Jr always works for me when they are on top in white, bone,or any dark back with white or bone belly.
Mirro lure 17R or 18R
Any of the Zara Spooks & similar types, Rapala Jerkbaits & Skitter Walk, Mirrodine 17mr/18mr
Blue, green, chartreuse backs on white or silver sides/belly.
ok my plan is to get the zara jr in bone and the 17 mr in chart/pearl.does this sound like a good choice to have in my box?wanna get the colors right.
Depends on tide, wind conditions, type of living bait in water and water clarity.
With that said, there is a hardened shrimp lure at Bass Pro for $3.99. It is a cheap knock off of the Yozuri Crystal Shrimp (which is also great), but 3x the price for same thing. It is also heavier, so can be cast against the wind--ironically, it has stronger hooks than the Yozuri as well.
It is the best Speck Topwater available. Period. Inexpensive as well. Any of the colors work fine. Some will say these lures don't work, and it is only because they have no clue how to use them. Learn to use them correctly, and They. Are. The. Best. By. FAR!
Afterward, I follow with Mirrodine Mirrolures--any color combo works as long as it replicates a baby shad-shape.
Third goes to yozuri crystal minnows, 3"-4". ANY color works here as well. Cheap knock off minnows do well.
There are a variety of others I use in my tackle, but these three are the best and land me specks when nothing else will.
Color of the lures don't seem to matter at night--which is when topwater fishing for specks is most efficient.
During the day time, topwater can be tougher, and I recommend going with the most simplistic and plain colors available, such as straight silver (fish) or brown (shrimp).
Anytime you want to learn how to catch some fat specks on topwater, I'll gladly meet up with you and show you how it's done.

I have used this one at Ft. Morgan and did pretty good. Adam gave me a lesson on how to fish them at the pier on night. It was really late that night and I left shortly after so I didn't have much success at the pier with it. Walmart has a $2.97 pink topwater plug that was killer in the bay under the lights from first light until about 20 minutes before sunrise back in June. It is a walk the dog style lure with similar action to a Bomber Badonkadonk. Its amazing the difference in the disposition of the specks under the lights at Fort Morgan and the lockjaw $%^&**@*s under the pier.
