Live shrimp (or LYs) from the pier with minimal terminal tackle for specks.
Lures work well elsewhere...
Hope this helps!
It's strange, but true! Lures, for speckled trout, just don't work well at all on the Gulf Shores Pier. In the bay, I can sometimes get 10 hits on 10 casts with an artificial, but from the pier - nothing. Not even a good look. My terminal rig consists of 14 inches or so of fluorocarbon leader, tied uni-to-uni -- and a smallish hook. No weights, no swivels! I like a large live shrimp, but a scaled sardine or a small lively pinfish will catch those big ones well, too.
For the novices: Don't throw artificials first and THEN try to entice them with live bait. Speckled trout, visible from the pier, are extremely wary and you'll turn them off by casting at them with artificial lures. Your best strategy is to try to catch live bait (not right where you see the specks!) with a sabiki rig and use the scaled sardines or pinfish (you may have to tip the sabikis with a tiny bit of shrimp/cut bait to get pinfish to bite it) for bait.
