What type, color & size spoon do you recommend for surf fishing?
Clarks, Sprites and Krocodiles are my favorites, lots of others are good too.
Silver and Gold, anything else just attracts the fisherman.
1/2oz to 2.5oz
For the price,it's hard to beat the Cotton Cordell C.C. Spoon. They are a Hopkins Shorty knock-off at one third the price at around $4.75 per two pack.
I may be in the minority but I like a smaller spoon on lighter gear in early morning and late afternoon. Fish move in closer and the the smaller lure is easier to get a hook into smaller fish. I think 1/4 ounce is what I was using last time.
No matter what you use, it should have at least some protection (we all need some protection ;-)
In calm, clear water I may just use a black snap swivel (simple cast & retrieve for targeting speckled trout).
When ladyfish, blues or mackerel are present you'll need a length of heavy clear mono or fluorocarbon leader.
Hope this helps!
Simple cast and straight retrieve?
Depends, sometime stop & go, other times slow & steady, then other time as fast as you can work it.
A good spoon will have quite a bit of action and flash, I tend to just vary my retrieve rate.
But sometimes I'll give it a few flicks of the rod.
I fund it hard to fish any but the heaviest spoons from the pier, most will almost kite out of the water in a good breeze or fast retrieve.
Retrieve too slow and lose all that action, so sometimes I add a large splitshot a few feet up the line to help keep it down.
Thank you! I will keep those options in mind.
Another good 'old school' spoon thats been around for years is the SideWinder Spoon. I searched all stores in Mobile with no luck. But I went to J&M and guess what ya'll had it.
