I am thinking of trying a St. Croix MOJO spinning surf rod, 11 ft. Mostly for whatever is biting beyond the breakers, soaker bait.
Any opinions on this rod

Good choice: the 11'r sounds about right MSS110MHMF2

If you are into building your own or having it built for you look at the RodGeeks blanks. Made and designed by the St Croix folks and some very nice blanks in their lineup. Colors are up to you, even two tone.
Batson also have some excellent blank products , their eternity 2 line is good. CUI blanks not to be ignored either,it can take a while to get them from New Zealand if its an uncommon spec you have for the blank. But they will build to your specs if you know what you want at that level.
Bear in mind all these are not 'bargain' lines.
Go to BPS or get an 'off the shelf custom' for bargains.
St. Croix is made near my cabin in Park Falls, Wisconsin and have some quality products. I use two 9' rods for Redfish and Kings and they hold up well. I've had them several years even though they are seconds from the factory. That being said, their MOJO line had been outsourced to Mexico. Not saying they are any poorer quality, just sayin!
I'm too cheap to own a high dollar rod, but if I were looking for a premium rod, St. Croix is my choice. I've looked into their rods and will eventually be getting one of their saltwater rods.
Mojos get good reviews.
Most of us never come near getting the maximum distance out of our gear because of technique issues, not lack of sheer muscle or lack of the best graphite, so practice over grass after watching some instructional videos will help get the most out of your investment.
what reel you puting on it? i picked up a boca 60 and thought it may match up pretty sweet on a 11' mojo spinning
I have 2 12' Mojo casting rods. They are rated up to 16oz and have a real strong back bone. Consider getting 12' foot - always better to have the ability to throw heavier weight if needed. I can throw 10oz plus bait with my 12 footers.
I've never had to use more than 4 oz's in the surf. I've gone to 5 sometimes if fishing in the pass with a strong tide.
You will find the sweet spot with your rod. I was just saying that those rods have the backbone to throw that much weight. I very rarely have to throw 10oz weights. I do most of my surf/pier fishing in Ocean City, MD and in the Outer Banks. Using an 6-8oz weight plus bait in those locations is common and necessary.
With the 12' Mojo and a Daiwa Saltist baitcaster - 8oz plus bait consistently gets me the most distance.
I'm going to OBX next week. I'm primarily interested in fishing fleas for Pomps so most of my surf fishing will be in and behind the surf. Carrying home made spiders in case a sideways current is running. Distance not a factor for me but I could see how the heavier weights might be helpful if I was needing distance.
I hope you slay the pompano but they may be few and far between with the water still so warm. Redfish run the trough this time of year and they too will eat sandfleas. Sandfleas can be real hard to find sometimes. My best luck finding them is right at sunset when the beaches are all but abandoned. Good luck!
If you want to catch some fish - go to Jennettes Pier in Nags Head and walk to the end. They might still be pin-rigging right now so you wont be able to fish off the end of the pier until after 7 or 8pm. It's getting close to the time of the year for big drum to start rolling by the NC piers.
Great time of the year to be in OBX. Hit up the Roadside Bar & Grill in Duck, NC if you want a REALLY nice meal one night.
Appreciate the advice and trying my best not to sound spoiled, but I'm not looking for any drum. I get to catch them frequently just ten minutes from my house here in SC. Have a saltwater creek that we go to for Reds, Black drum, Sheeps and Specs. What we don't have are Pomps, Blues and Spanish. I do appreciate the tip on the Roadside for sure!
Here is a 30" I caught on a light outfit using chunk mullet the other day, got it just up out of the water enough to unhook it and snap it's pic. Daily bag/slot here is three 15"-23". http://www.gulfshorespierfishing.com...tid=5388&stc=1
I've never had a problem finding fleas at the OBX . In fact we used to able to walk along the beach and flip up the soft shell ones with our big toe .They seem more plentiful there than GS for some reason .
Good luck
