I spent a few minutes looking at the state records in the 2016 MRD calender and one stood out as breakable on the pier,sharksucker. I looked in DR Shipps book to make sure it was the same as a remora and it is. It's not the most glamorous record but the current weight is 4lbs. 7oz. and I would think some bigger than that have been caught off the pier.
I know I have caught at least 2 that were over 3lbs and possibly in the 4lb range
Wow... I hooked one last summer fishing for Mangrove and flounder on a bull minnow. Snapped 12# big game. Probably a fray in the line from constant casting near the pilings but it was huge nonetheless.
Please, please, keep every one you catch so you can weigh it.
Sounds like we have the makings of a Summer Remora Tournament.
Remember to spay or neuter your remora.

I remember back in the sixties/seventies we caught we caught them on jigs. They averaged in the forty pound range.
Of course these were "mature" fish and apparently they lose their suckers at some stage of their growth!

If you catch a fish at the pier that you suspect is a state record how do you go about getting it weighed and certified?

Any certified scale will do, as long as its witnessed. Best to take a photo of it being weighed. All grocery stores, seafood shops, etc.., have certified scales.
Caught what I first thought was a small remora last year and almost stuck my needle nose pliers in its head and discovered it was a small cobia. Needless to say we all caught a lot of flack over the 8-10 that were drying on the deck when the news cam out to take pictures of al the sharks.

We have caught a few small remora surf fishing and always put them back. Is there a size or other restriction to harvesting? I want to eat one.

I never thought about the record, i actually weighed one at 7lbs 6oz 2 years ago at the pier, we were bored and having a family competition of biggest fish since no other action was happening lol, teach me to start paying attention to the records now
I bet if we seriously held one of these "joke" tournaments for a fish like a remora that would be the time I'd never catch one but rather the flat fish I usually go after...
