Hello im new to the forum. I have fished the pier once in Nov 2011 and had a great time with plenty of help from pier staff. Caught alot of small blues and some trash fish. Will be down May 7th-12th. I mainly fish the surf but plan on coming to pier at least once. Any advice on spanish from the surf. Ive fished Outer Banks surf for years but trip getting to long. Also like to fish for whiting. Any advice helpful will be staying across bridge towards Flora-Bama
I havent really spanish fish from the surf but when i do i usually get a small LY and throw it out i have had the best luck with that ive seen people throw looney jigs from surf and catch them also from pier if ur looking forward to catch the spanish there Looney jigs, Yo-Zuris, Gotchas, and small ly's or cigar minnows
it would be too hard to get a little ly out there far enough to catch spanish,that might be effective for blues but if your trying to catch spanish from the surf the only thing i can think of is a gotcha cause its heavy enough to get it far enough out. if your trying to catch them from the surf you might want to consider fishing the jetties (alabama point) there pretty thick over there especially early in the morning, the most effective bait i think is a white looney jig or a small conners pompano jig.Quote:

Its not real common catching spanish from the surf but if you really try a few different spots you should be able to find some and you may get a pompano or two as well. Always hear good things around the surf on the sides of lagoon pass and around the jettys by the perdido pass (orange beach). Be wary of riptides, these areas have stronger currents than most.
bud of mine who surf fishes alot says that he uses mirrolures, spoons, and bucktail jigs. gotcha would probly work though
Thanks for advice usually throw a green/pink spoon on 12 lb test okuma spinning reel 7 and half rod. Can reach out pretty far. Caught several at Dauphin Island last July on that rig. Reel back as fast as i can they seemed to like it. Any idea if whiting are in surf yet or pompano.
Alabama point at the end of the rocks or really though out the pass I would think would be OK too....but would need an Alabama fishing license ....on the pier you only need a pier Alabama license cheaper anyway....but can only fish the pier with it and NOT the beach
I've had good luck earlier in the year with pompano in the surf east of Perdido Pass. Used fresh dead shrimp.
