Surf Fishing First Timer

What is the best type of rig to use in the surf? Do you set up with a bottom rig? What are the best type of jigs to use?

Any advise or tips will be appreciated?

Carolina rigs work good for most things in the surf. I use a 1 oz egg weight and it holds fine with a 20 lb leader. Live shrimp if possible or fresh dead is the best bait. The deep part of the trough between the sand bar and the shore is a good place to throw

This is just a basic rig- First to a snap swivel to main line and put a 2 ounce pyramid weight (3 on rough days) , Then tie the main line to a barrel swivel, finally tie on a leader with about 1- to 1 and a half feet of line to the remaining part of the swivel and tie hook. For leader, it all depends on what you are fishing for. Like for whiting you would want light leader but for redfish you might want 30+ pound leader. They also sell pre made ones that work okay if you don't want to go to all the trouble of making them and buying all the supplies. For the hook I say the smaller the better, a 2/0 eagle claw chunk bait holder hook will work great for almost everything. The fish like pompano and whiting have small mouths so you want a small hook.
