Ugly Stick ???
Just bought a new Penn Battle 6000, and planning to buy an ugly stick for fishing from the beach.
My question is 10 ft.med. hvy, or 12 hvy. Don't want to fish with a broom stick if the 12 ft.is that stiff. Anyone with any experence with these rods.
Thanks, Flipinstick

That question is dependent on many things.
What species are you targeting?
Fishing bait, lures or both?
Can you cast as far as you need with the 10' or the 12'?
How big are the weights/baits you plan on casting... Do you want a 10' to cast large lures, then a a 10' Med/Hvy or Hvy with a fast tip.
Do you want to chunk big weights/baits over the bar... The a 12' Hvy with a slow action tip, that you can really load up is the ticket.
Are you going to be fishing just one rod?
Example, I have one 12' with a Heavy/Fast Action that I cast smaller rigs with, and a X-Heavy 'broomstick' 12' that I toss 6-8oz of weight and half a mullet with.Ragnar Benson:

I'll add...
You don't necessarily need a 10' or 12' Hvy rod for the surf if targeting many species.
6' - 9' in anything from light to med, would tackle all the Specks, Red/Black Drums, Ground Mullets, Whiting, White Trout, Pompano and etc, just fine.Ragnar Benson:

I have both the 10 and 12' ugly stiks and they were bought for fishing in the surf. They are both excellent quality rods for the money, damn near bullet proof. They are excellent for casting 4 to 8 oz of lead plus bait and will handle anything that gets hooked up. The downside is that unless you need 4 oz or more they are heavy and definitely would be less than fun chunking artificials. I feel pretty silly pulling in a whiting with a 12 foot rod and and a 6 oz sinker plus bait, but when they are out there and the tide is strong, what're you gonna do. For entry level stuff, they are a bargain. I will be adding a new rod soon from Cabelas, it is what they call a specialty rod, specifically a predator. It is 11' and rated for 3oz, sounds perfect for most surf fishing in the Gulf.
