How long to make it ?
2"-2 1/2" is what we do
Sometimes I go down to about 1 1/2 if the fish seem to be hitting and missing.
Thanks y'all!
As long as we're on the subject, what is the optimal length of the leader (distance between the bubble and the hook)?
Anyone ever try weighting the straw/treble so that it casts without the occasional tangle? I noticed that every so often when I cast the straw would tangle around the front of the bubble.
Yes, I have, it does not make much difference on the cast but I do like the action it gives. Have not noticed any better results with the fish.
To keep the tangles out just feather the line gently as the bubble approaches the water and it will make the straw lay out past the bubble without tangling. The problem causing the tangles is that the straw is following right behind the bubble (dragged behind). If you feather it too hard it will jerk around, but it does not take too much practice to get it right and make the habit.
I like a pretty long leader myself. I like it a little longer than most when the line starts getting frayed I can just cut a couple inches off and back fishing. Mine tends to be anywhere between 2-3 feet long.
Y'all pay attention to Robert, he knows what he's talking about. If DanS II and Fishntime add their wisdom, you'll know everything there is to know about bubbles except how to hold your mouth.
Another tip I tried couple of weeks ago that some of you that use shoe goo on your bubbles might want to try. If you have the problem of your line getting frayed when you hook a Spanish around the knot when the tube slides up the hook. I put a little goo on the hook shaft after tying the hook on and then some at the fork on the hook around the tube after I slid it onto the hook. It kept the tube from sliding up the leader when fighting a fish. Worked good until the big guy in the grey suit ate my Spanish.
Great idea !! Thanks ! I never thought of that but makes perfect sense We all can always learn courtesy of this Forum
Johntr21,
These pros are spot on. I, like Robert(Tato), use about a 3' leader so I can quickly retie after cutting a couple inches of frayed leader off. Gets you back in the water in half the time.
I have been cutting my tubes at about a 45 degree angle that sometimes seems to act a little like a lip and makes the tube dart a little more. I, likewise have used a split shot ahead of the tube, but I guess in retrospect, I don't catch any more fish than the pros above. I just like bubble rigs cause the work you can make your own and are a lot cheaper when you lose one compared to a gotcha.
Good fishing...
I love the bubble rigs, too. The visual aspect is fun, fun, fun. I do one thing I don't see much. I use various sized circle hooks, especially when the LadyFish and Blues are hitting. The hook-set is a little different... but it allows me a little safer C&R on those fish. The treble hooks really tear up their mouths but the circle hooks tend to let me put them back in to grow into bigger fish.
When you coming back down Fshntime sure will be glad to start seeing your reports again.
Thanks for all the info , appreciate it !
Tato,
The sooner the better. Usually around Sept. 1st. Really miss my pier family. Will probably have to hit the pass a few times too. Really enjoy any photos that are posted. I always check the people in the background to see who's doing what. Thanks friend!
58 mm.
More or less.
