The best "budget" combo that I have found is a Penn Pursuit 6000 on an 8' medium heavy rod. It is fine for throwing plugs and minnows. Academy has their combos 25% from time to time. I was in J&M today and they have a ton of combos that are probably a lot better quality but a little more expensive. Buy once, cry once.Quote:

Buy quality once , buy bargains again and again, in the end you'll spend more then if you bought quality the first time, As I tell my son's when they want something and say buy this one cost's less ,
I say there's a reason for that , Save till you can get the good one , you'll have it longer.
On my last/first trip down I purchased a Penn Pursuit II 4000 reel and rod Combo from J&M Tackle. They included line which made the buy very competitive. I am just getting into this pier fishin mania and have found these Penn entry level products to be very good. For how long...time will tell I guess.
I found it was easier to buy the two independently and shop the sales. Found a Uglystick gx2 or whatever for $25 that works awesome and spent a bit more on my reel(s). Using a bit of google can lead to a lot of savings over places like Bass Pro / Cabelas and even Amazon. Tackledirect and some of the small companies can have some outstanding deals. That being said I like most people have bought rod/reel from JM as well.

I like to buy slightly used when someone needs the money bad.....get good stuff for on the cheaper side.....I can wait for the deals,then try and sell what they replaced....getting a stella 3000 tomorrow up here not as cheap as I wanted but I guess cheap enough .....be a good spanish or what ever reel .
