OK...once again forgive me if this is a stupid question...but. Does any one use ultra light equipment at the pier or the beach around the pier? I absolutely love catching panfish, trout and sometimes bass on ultralights! Might consider taking a rod and reel down if there was some use for it. If you never tried ultralights/microlights, I highly recommend it! Good times!

Duck loved fishing ultralight....myself I usually have slightly more then needed to land a targeted fish, but that is me....Pier#r has landed some impressive fish on light tackle, I am sure others have too....nothing wrong with using it, but plan on more break offs if you do....you never know what might bite at any giving time.
I brought an ultralight one time drifting a shrimp in the shallows for trout right at dusk. Wouldn't you know I hooked into a big a$$ sting ray and about spooled me. You remember that Pier#r lol? Although it would be fun, a micro wouldn't hold up IMO.
I fish 6# ultralight for a lot of species on the pier, including Spanish, trout, sheepshead, and even landed 2 barely legal kings on it. Pier#er fishes 4# test.
How about in Little Lagoon?

I am a meat fisher when there..... filling the freezer for future fish fries at home, being the few trips I am able to make, loosing fish isn't an option, even up here I fish slightly more then needed most of the time....you never know walleye fishing, when that 25+lbs muskie will take the lure....so it's usually 12lb test or up to 17 when trolling due to the snags....although sometimes to get bites.... you have to down size the leaders, hooks and bait .....Just watch Mr. Pier#r or Mr. Haywire....very good tip my last trip there and sure made a heck of a difference in catching(and loosing) but you have to get bit first to worry about loosing....I had heard many saying why it was the same guys catching and they weren't....Haywire would walk up in the middle of a dozen on the rail with baits in the water and no one catching and get bit in very short time....amazing...... luckily they shared there secret....we would lay back and just watch him put on the clinic
I use 8# for all my smaller reels. 16# on the big reels
If you want more of a challenge bring the little stuff. I have caught Trout, slot reds, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Spanish, and several legal Kings. The biggest King was around 12 lbs. I use 6lb line.
There was a guy that used to be on here (Viking Guy??) that fished ultra light for kings. Saw him catch a butt load one day couple years ago during a pier chew down. Popped off 14 or 15. Was pretty amazing. Don't know what happened to him. Posted a lot of good info and then just disappeared.
An ultralight setup would be perfect for fishing small soft plastic swimbaits around a dock with bright lights at night for specs and slot reds. Did really well there and at another dock down at Ft. Morgan last year. The problem is finding a dock to fish from if you aren't staying at a Lagoon front property or "visiting" with someone who is.Quote:

Seriously, there is a time a place for every tool and ultralight tackle is just another 'tool'.
There was one clear water day (mid-late morning) this summer when Harley and Doug had a nice group of specks scoped out on the sandbar but could NOT get them to eat a live shrimp on 8# mono.
I limited out on 4# and handed off another 4 or 5 fish to people fishing nearby or walking by.
Boy were they ticked off! :pirate
And it's not just in extremely clear water.
There are plenty of times (and places) when a finesse presentation will garner more strikes than an ordinary one ;-)

Ultralight floro even makes a difference on a gold-hook rig for bait catching. Ms. Pat from Navarre steered me the right way on that.
