Not sure I would, but I was wondering if umbrella rigs (Alabama rig, etc) were allowed to be used on the pier. If they are what is the hook limit(1,3,5 etc)?
I could see them being useful, but probably not a great idea due to potential multiple hookups (trying to land them and potential tax collectors.
I tried an umbrella rig off the pier in Port Aranses, TX, once! It didn't work at all and it caused a lot of cluster f***s. I had made up quite a few before I had gone down to TX. All the time and effort wasted, like so many of my "bright" ideas to catch more fish. BUT, at least I was thinking about catching fish, and that is enjoyable. To often I have a problem trying to out smart the fish and I don't have a chance. They were legal down there.

Yes it is legal, but that doesn't necessarily make it right ;-)

David, that gives me the cold shivers just looking at it. It would certainly be effective in clearing a space at the rail. It would also limit your catch to one or two fish because you'd be spending the rest of your time getting out tangles and removing the hooks from the fish and yourself.
You're right, that's one of the things best left alone.

Actually tandem rigs (jigs or 3"-4" swimbaits) are VERY effective sometimes.
Especially on mackerel, bluefish and small jacks.

But you are thinking of a 'school' presentation instead of an inline presentation like the sabiki. Hmmmm
The pier does have a 5 hook rule "No more than 5 hooks per Sabiki style rig"
