Underwater Pier Cleanup

I just found out that the local Scuba Association is working with the appropriate state agency to schedule a clean up under the pier this coming October.

My next door neighbor, Mark Bolinger, is heavily involved in the local Scuba association told me that they plan to have forty to sixty divers, with the appropriate number of boats come to the pier the second week in October and spend some three hours cleaning the debris from under the pier. He said there will be several GoPro cameras in operation so we will be able to see what the underwater structure looks like.

If y'all have any suggestions as to the time of day (be realistic) for them to do this, pass them along to me and I'll tell him. I had mentioned doing it from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m---that way, any morning bite would be over, more or less, as far as it's possible to predict anything about fishing. I told him about that period in October being when the fall Spanish run hopefully occurred, and he said he would pass that along, and that it was the kind of information he was looking for to make it a positive experience for everybody.

It should be really interesting to see what comes out from underneath.

Mark said they are including lots of divers because once some of them see the size and number of sharks around the pier, they'll be wanting to spend the day on the boats.

Hope they are planning to bring some knives (chainsaws?) to deal with the tangled mess of 680# braid I imagine is down there. I also bet they will get some great footage!

You guys should get a pool going as to how many rod and reels that they will find.

The amount of braid and hooks, I hope their tetnus shots are current and their knives sharp. Perhaps spearguns to thin the sharks too (one can only hope).

What's the creel on divers? Is it TL or FL? Will they be selling the rods and reels they find?

Is this part of the dive against debris project?

Their not planning to take out the shark beds I hope. They wouldn't have a place to sleep and might feel unwelcome and leave.

Yep. I would be nervous in the water with those sharks.

Never have I heard of something like this. I am so jealous. Those of us who crappie fish around the bridges of the Guntersville Lake on the Tennessee River from the bank have long wished for someone to clean out all the old fishing lines from amongst the rock rip-rap. There is so much old line in most places, the current has woven it together and become mini-cables, you snag it you loose it, break off and re-tie. Wish you much success, sounds like a great idea.

As far as time goes, it seems like the dog days of August from 10 am to 2 pm would interfere less with good fishing. Maybe just after school starts back up so that there would be fewer vacationers.

And I'd advise bang sticks for sharks, liberally applied.

I suggested that August time to my buddy, and he brought it up at the meeting, but neither he nor I draw enough water to make it stick. They did, however, move it from early October to the 21st. Don't know if that's any better, but it will only be three or four hours out of the day---inconvenient for those who plan vacations for that time, but not an insurmountable difficulty.

Seems to me they are doing us a favor so we should be able to give up a few hours

Even if your advertising it for months, Someone will show up and get all sideways because he didn't know and he's been planning to
fish the pier, on his only vacation to the beach this year.
Its like road work,no one likes sitting in the traffic jam it causes, But we don't think twice about it later as we fly down the road later

On the old pier somebody had a home made grapple hook with like 1/4'' rebar he would scrape the pylons and would gather all kinds of terminal gear. The metal was easy to straiten out if it got hung up and could be rebent easily.
