Violations of Pier Rules and Alabama Fishing Regulations

It "field" possession, once you reach your "place of abode" (house, condo, RV back at the camp, etc.), and process the fish, they are no longer counted towards "possession".
But they do still count towards that days limit, cant go catch another days limit just cause you filleted them back at the house.

Assuming you are fishing alone:
If you are on the pier and have more than a days limit in your cooler: ticket.
If you are headed off the pier and have more than ones days limit of fillets in the cooler: ticket.
If you are in your vehicle on the way back to your "place of abode" and get pulled over for some reason and you have more than a days limit of un-processed fish in the cooler, ticket.

Crossing state lines with fish & game is always tricky, I will ask our enforcement guys.

+1 for Chile. Possession is just that, possession, period. Limits and sizes are posted on the pier, at least on the octi!

Is this a ticket or a felony?

I ask because when we go fishing in my boat or a buddy's boat it is not unusual for the boat owner to take all the fish back to the condo while one or two others go run errands before meeting back up.

I might risk a ticket in that case, but not a felony.

I know the daily limits, actually have a copy of creel and size limits taped to the inside of my cooler on my cart, and i knew once they were back at where i was staying they didnt count towards possession, was wondering if there is an "abode" possession limit, always leave the already filleted fish at the campsite everyday, and im an alabama resident so dont have to worry about crossing state lines, lived in other states that have had possession limits on how many you could have in your freezer, just never found any regulation like that for alabama and dont know if there is one

As for the last part of your reply carl, i do know that alabama has a law stating only 1 days limit may be taken across state lines

Technically, yes, the "boat owner" would be in violation of the possession limit.

Is it a felony? I'm pretty darn sure its not, but it could be expensive.

That said, all other things in order, I think officer's discretion would play a big part.
And Marine Enforcement Officers aren't out there just looking to pull over and check people towing boats on the highways.
99% of the time once you pull away from the ramp onto the highway, you aren't going to get pulled over unless something gives the officer a reasonable cause to do so.

Alabama does not.

People make something so easy so hard.. I hate seeing someone with out fishing lic being told just go get one at the pier house..thats BS to me.. You should not haft to be told what to do when you do something such as hunting or fishing you're suspost to know laws and limits ... Fish and game must be a babysitter's to these people

Back in the days when I bought my Lifetime License my rational CPA brother-in-law told me I could have just put the 100 dollars in the bank and just bought a yearly one with the interest and still had my 100 bucks. 2 weeks after that he and his son got caught fishing without one and the game warden waved the ticket if they both purchased the lifetime one. Look what a lifetime cost today and we got grandfathered into the saltwater also. Was one of the best purchases I've ever made. That was 1982 and now I don't need one anymore.

Seen the warden out at pier Tuesday at 9:30 p . He just missed the couple cleaning 13 Pomp's and bout a cooler full of Spanish........I told him to come around 3 to 6 and he could make a better presence..... But he was very helpful with the reporting app....."seemed"like a overall good guy

Anyone who claims they didn't know they needed a fishing license is either a Complete idiot or flat out lying. Either way they deserve a ticket. And if you see someone cleaning 13 pompano call the warden for gods sake.

I would think cell phone pics are 'reasonable cause' and admissible in court...

I corresponded with MRD Enforcement just a little while ago:

"We have had officers out there and are working with the park by providing some training to the Rangers.
We generally try and let them (Rangers) handle most items.
Please continue to encourage the people to use the 24 hour line. If we have officers out that can respond they will respond.
We will continue to check as often as possible but as you know we do have a multitude of items to work. "


So, bottom line: you see violations, call the 24 hour line or call the Pier Office.
MRD or the Rangers will try to respond ASAP, but they aren't always able to.
But they darn sure wont know if we don't call.

There is no d@mn excuse to not have a AL Pier license! Mine renews for less than 30$ online in minutes. I get a email when I need to renew also. I don't fish the surf or in a boat so the pier lic. is all i need. then pay a whoppin $9 to enter and fish the pier.. cant feed a big gal for that cheap...

Its literally so easy a caveman can do it!

I thought the AL pier license is $6 why did you pay $30 did you buy both regular license and pier license is that necessary if I only fish on GS pier?

The Pier License is good on the PIER ONLY. If you plan on surf fishing, crabbing, flounder gigging, or catching bait with a cast net; you have to have an AL Saltwater License.
All of us 65 and older “old farts” don’t need a license but do have to sign up on the Salt Water Registry on line. Same website as license purchase, but free.

thanks by far whenever i got a chance to go saltwater fishing i go to the pier only so $6 it is even cheaper than my freshwater license!

I have no problem with 'big Brother' watching, even when I'm picking up other peoples' trash. lol
But I'm glad the professionals are out there to take out 'the garbage' ;-)

Wrong attitude dude, conservation works.
But unfortunately not everyone is on board with it.
I've seen people/families catch and keep Everything that bit a hook, stuff coolers full of fish to be sold commercially to Asian markets.
I want enforcement, I welcome it.

As for picking up trash, watch a lot of regulars who care about the pier and the environment, they pick up other people's trash as they go along the pier.
I'm willing to bet you've never packed out more trash than you took into an area.

If that's your outlook on pier rules and game laws, I think you'd be far happier somewhere else, like Mexico. The other day, I made it a point to express my appreciation to the ranger who was checking licenses, etc. on the pier. I'd like to see him there full time.

This is the right way to go about living your life! How tormented people must be to have to constantly look around to see if they're being watched because they're constantly at least bending the rules. I'm good with any enforcement personnel checking my license or otherwise performing their duties. I keep a measuring tape in my box and a size/numbers limits reminder taped to the top of my tackle box. I know the difference between a big spanish and a juvy king and I'm happy to show a conservation officer my legal catch. I'm in no way even tempted into non-compliance.

Enforcement is welcome by me! If the enforcement officers are doing their job, they should not be picking up trash. Do you see cops on the side of the road picking up liter? Of course not. How foolish. Bring it on...

Im always happy to see fish and game enforcement out doing their job, whether im on the pier, out in the woods, or on some quiet backwater lake, its needed with so many who dont give a damn and take whatever they feel like, i want my kids and grandkids to be able to enjoy the same fishing and hunting experiances i have and having officers out enforcing the rules is the only way that will happen, have great respect for the job they do and wish there were more of them

Having been an avid golfer for over 4 decades, I put a lot of weight behind the honor system. Yet, I understand the purpose of law enforcement. Gspp is open to the public. No individual is more deserving or important than any other. Some choose to ignore rules but the vast majority comply for the sake of fairness and good citizenship. I would like to think that everyone understand the need to avoid being so nosy that they lose sight of the purpose of the pier. Having fun. Law enforcement is paid to enforce. Citizens have a duty to support its purpose but not at the expense of frightening pier goers by ratting on one another without just cause or over zealousness.
