What to throw for spanish
Last year I visited J and M for the first time. A fisherman/salesman helped me out a bunch. He sold me on the Gotcha lure for spanish. They worked great but I couldn't help but wonder if there are other lures that I should consider for spanish. Any suggestions?
Re: What to throw for spanish
White Looney jig. Can't go wrong at all with that. I also like small spoons as well.

But in all seriousness. I had the most success last year using a bubble cork and a clark spoon. Killed the spanish with that setup. I also killed the spanish by catching baby LY at the pier, putting them in the live well, then taking them to Navarre. Killed the awe handles, and the regulars just starred at me wondering where I caught them.
Re: What to throw for spanish
Please forget about my AL rig post rodbender. The big spanish are caught using small live LY's or small dead cigs using a scaled down king leader consisting of a foot of 10lb wire, very tiny swivel and a #4 or 6 2x trebel hook. Thanks for stoping by J&M the last time you were in town, please introduce yourself when you make it back.
Re: What to throw for spanish
Good old fashioned white mackerel jig. I hear them called Looney Jigs on here.
Bubble rig with a McDonalds Straw or a Clark Spoon.
Spec Rig, may need to add a small egg sinker in front of it for weight.
Smallest LY you can catch, short wire leader, fished about 2' under a cork.
Tail-end from larger LY. Cut the LY diagonally from the anal fin up to the dorsal fin. Snobble like a cigar minnow.

They are called a Looney Jig, because they are Looney Jigs :poke1:

How much are those looney jigs??
Re: What to throw for spanish
I think they were like a buck or two last year. They're a pretty good bang for your buck.

I free-line my small LY. No float. Spanish tend to aim for the float sometimes, cutting your line.
Re: What to throw for spanish
Gotchas for the smaller spanish. Dead cig for ther bigger spanish.

Re: What to throw for spanish
[size=12pt]Not sure, but I think a can catch more fish with Looney Jigs for a lot less money.
I get upset when I lose a Cobia Jig; might have to call 911 if I lost one of these things.
They are spreading across the area, saw this at Dick’s in Daphne/Spanish Fort today.
When did Dick open his open store? WOW!

Bring some to the pier on Saturday, I'll buy a few from you.
Re: What to throw for spanish
Wonder how many tourist you can catch with the A rig when a spanish spits it on the set and it comes hurtling at the rail at the speed of sound? ;D I am kinda toying with the idea of trolling one (home made of course, not spending $25 for a lure unless I have the chance of catching $25 worth of sushi grade tuna!).
