unless you have a liver or immune system disorder don't let it bother you.
Odds are about 100000:1 greater that you will die in a car crash on the way,
and about half the chance you will be struck by lighting if you survive the drive over ;-)
what bacteria?????
Vibrio vulnificus , the so-called 'flesh eating bacteria'
http://blog.al.com/gulf-coast/2013/07/man_dies_from_flesh-eating_bac.html
It seems every year about this time the media jumps all over these obscure (as in EXTREMELY rare) occurances to warn us how dangerous the water is.
Not that precautions shouldn't be taken, but it's nothing like the chances we take every time we fish in the rain or drive in an automobile.
Oh well. I'm concerned about my little boy, and I really wanna go this weekend.
Ur fine man, like #r said, unless you have a really bad pre-existing problem, don't worry about it.
Like noted:
You are more likely to die in a car crash on the way to the boat ramp than get Vibrio.
Unless your son has a compromised immune system, its not something you need to worry about.
Could it happen? Sure. But then the zombie apocalypse or alien invasion could start this weekend too, right before the giant asteroid hits us.......
Thank you all.
If you don't hug a barnacle covered piling or walk barefooted thru oyster beds, you will be fine.
Also the media is saying not to eat oysters on the half-shell, and I totally think that is a great idea, cuz every oyster someone doesn't eat is one more for me!
As much as the mainstream media and the Resident of The Whitehouse would like America to believe the sky is falling, it is not!
Hope this helps
David, will this go away as the water temps cool?
Bacteria are ALWAYS present in water, fortunately most are harmless to humans and the numbers do decrease dramatically with a drop in temperature.
Good grief... I've read this last few lines several times and cannot decide if the chiding of Fin is cuteness, too, or some left-wing, bomb-throwing Anarchist whose whitey tighties are too snug to realize this is an informal forum about fishing and fishermen in lower Alabama. It's all fun 'til you dot someone's eye. We'll see now, huh?
First of all Fin must be a he are an awful ugly she, second; T chill out we all lub Obama just some to lesser degrees.
This is yet another example of the media trying to scare the public during a slow period of news with information about a public health issue without expanding upon all the facts involved. You are much more likely to contract MRSA from a Walmart shopping cart or vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) from visiting a loved one in a nursing home than this obscure brackish water bacteria. The news outlets in Kentucky made a huge deal out of 'toxic algae blooms' in Corps lakes this past summer and had everyone questioning whether they would use the lakes for fishing or recreation. I could tell no difference when I visited the lake I grew up on for a week in July to crappie fish and it didn't stop me from taking a dip to cool off or eat the fish I caught. I have had the personal displeasure to see several cases of flesh eating bacteria or necrotizing fasciitis over my career and all but one case had multiple comorbidities that predisposed the individual to infection of a wound and all were caused by one of three organisms (group A strep, staph (including MRSA) or Clostridum perfringens (a gas gangrene-causing bacteria)). So the news needs to get their facts straight and be completely transparent if they're going to report on these unfortunate cases.
Just take the normal precautions that any prudent person would normally take during a fishing trip. Avoid cuts if possible, don't handle sharks without gloves to avoid shark rash, keep any existing wounds covered well with a bandage and don't go swimming in water over your neck if you are seriously concerned. I am more concerned about being seriously injured or killed on the drive to a day of fishing than any accident or other event that would occur during a normal day on the water. This news story doesn't even cause me to pause when considering a day of fishing and I do not consider myself to be one who takes on unnecessary risk. The water will cool, the bacterial colony numbers will fall as it does every autumn and nature will go on about its business as it has since the beginning of time.

Nolo,
I hope you got some useful info in answer to your question. A boat trip will great for the youngster whether you catch a pile of fish or not.
I am sorry that your thread got derailed by our censor, he must be new, cuz I didn't even know we had one.
Thanks for joining up and hopefully we will see y'all on the pier!
Fin
Mr. Wagon. sorry I haven't responded, but I went fishing on our wonderful pier.
Sometimes I am also sorry that FinChaser is a Moderator/Administrator too. But that's the price you pay for starting a forum.
1, He or she, you asked. I am a he and my government issued I. D. confirms that.
2. You say people can't ignore me, au contraire mon ami! If you will go to your account settings and look in the left hand column, you can click Edit Ignore List and simply type in FinChaser. Just like magic, you won't see my offensive posts any more! If it doesn't work, just let us know, one of us can probably fix it so you can't see my posts. Actually, I think it only takes two clicks!
3.You say there is a remedy and I am wondering if it might be covered under the Affordable Care Act prescription coverage or is it an over the counter remedy?
OK, got better things to do, need to go write a report and post some pics. Don't look.
"Sorry FinChaser is a moderator/admin and you are not allowed to ignore him or her."
This is what the system responded to me when I attempted to edit my ignore list by adding you to it.
I understood that political comments were to be confined to the "off-topic" area, and that the moderators would enforce this. Since I seem to be mistaken in this, I will withdraw from this forum. Many thanks to all those who have shared pier fishing knowledge for our benefit. Tight lines to you all.

Never mind. I suppose at this point, It'd be useless to say it.

WOW pretty thinned shinned aren't we.....denial is a hard thing to reason with and YOUR lying leader http://www.gulfcoastfishingconnectio...isc/giggle.gif ....
honestly it must be part of fishing, it is discussed on the rail a lot
Dang, I got here late I guess. This started off with good info about bacteria, and then Twagon shifted it to fun and entertaining!
just as it was getting funny, twagon took his ball and ran home. please come back Twagon
Allright, THANKS again to all of those who responded to my question. I guess its not a big deal like they put it. I'm going fishing. Thank you all.
It's a shame T-Wagon quit because, in reality, FinChaser does not exist. He is a cyber ghost, and in order to keep the fiction alive we have a series of extraordinarily good looking older gentlemen who show up at the pier on a random basis to impersonate him. The pirate flag and flamingo on his cart were chosen by a secret committee of forum members. For those who fear the takeover of civilization by computers, this is fuel for your fire, since the website created Fin's identity soon after it was started and it produced a composite image to be posted that seems to be detailed, but close inspection will show that it isn't---could be anybody with those general features. All those people you see with cameras and cell phones taking photos contribute to the "FinChaser Photography" fiction. It's a shame that this is the truth because the FinChaser persona is a truly superior being and we all wish that there were actually a real person like it to do so much work on this website and help folks on the pier.
I just hope I don't get in trouble for revealing this closely guarded secret. Gotta go now, I think one of the new pills is kicking in.
Just to get back to what is important; can anyone give me some detail on what is happening from the shore to the bathrooms? That is about as far as I get with my mobility issues. I will be down in 10 days and I am perfectly happy with whiting, ground mullet, flounder, pompano, bluefish, specks, reds, etc. The reports from my sister and friends currently at the Four Seasons are quite poor. It appears from the photos they send me that the pier has sanded in and is mostly very shallow this year. Hey Finchaser, thanks for all you do and I doubt that you realize how important this forum and all of it's regular posters are to an old geezer like me. I read it regularly and begin thinking of my next trip to the Gulf. I APPRECIATE ALL OF YOU GUYS AND LADIES THAT POST HERE. My sister has caught four cobia this week but all very small. I wish you all good fishing.......
This so-called 'flesh eating' bacteria has been around for a while...
Flesh-eating Bacteria: Coastal Scourge (Vibrio vulnificus) is Lurking in the Estuaries | Center for Environmental Communication | Loyola University New Orleans
Some good historical reading in that article as well as precations for avoiding it.
The current episode may include a slight 'spike' in occurances and there is an ongoing suspicion/investigation that tarballs left over from the 2010 oil spill may be concentrated 'incubators' for this and other bacteria.
Better Left Alone: Flesh-eating Bacteria Thrive in Tarballs ? From The Lab Bench
Quote:
Arias found that V. vulnificus numbers are 10× higher in tarballs than in sand, and up to 100× higher in tarballs than in seawater.
I haven't seen any tests or articles relating to the inherent dangers of picking up dead carcasses on the beach but always followed my mother's sound advice "PUT THAT DOWN, IT'S DEAD!" ;-)Quote:
It may be that they have the same effect as a rotten crab on a beach, which also provides an excess of organic carbon. But while most people will avoid a rotten carcass, they may be tempted to touch a tarball.
If my 'cuteness' and/or levity in relaying this obviously grave situation (eeek, we're all gonna die) offends anyone here I sincerely appologize and suggest they take a Midol, a nap or just a deep breath and get over it!
