I apologize for this not being related to fishing, but one of my pier friends wanted a 6 gal. gas can and I can't remember who! I have it for you...

Honestly, I am not sure Tom. But your speculation has merit as recent rains would have brought an influx of nutrients into eastern LL and a subsequent increase in macroscopic life feeding on that...
Rain/Red minnows shortage this...
