WTB Surf and Pier gear
I'm a newbie that's never pier or surf fished that needs gear. I'm tired of just laying around the beach and room when we come down to Gulf Shores.
Time to start catching lunch and Dinner!
I strongly prefer rod and reel combo's since I'm not real sure what I need. Any basic gear and/or tackle that I would need, I would be interested in, also. Thanks!

J&M is your go to place for all your beach/pier needs....depending on where your location and travels needs are....I prefer one piece rods but own a few 2 piece that work just as good and on future trips might be the only ones able to bring

PENN Spinfisher V Surf Rod and Reel Combo | Bass Pro Shops
If you want to target 'smaller' species (pompano, whiting, drum, etc.) get the 8 foot Penn Spinfisher V combo with 15" mono or 20# braid,
and if you want to concentrate on 'big game' (bull reds, rays & sharks) get the 9 foot (heavy action) combo and put 20# mono or 40#-65# braid.
$200 may sound like a lot but do yourself a favor, it's likely the last reel you will ever have to buy for beach fishing ;-)
Hope this helps!
+1 on J&M, they can help you get the right leaders, weights & hooks to go with your combo.(RETIRED) mostly.

Honestly, I am not sure Tom. But your speculation has merit as recent rains would have brought an influx of nutrients into eastern LL and a subsequent increase in macroscopic life feeding on that...
Rain/Red minnows shortage this...
