9'3" Phenix Black Diamond Hybrid

Well many of you have asked to see pictures of my new cobia rod I was building for myself. My wife told me I was limited to building myself one rod this year, so I built the rod I have wanted since I started building rods.

The platform for the rod is a 9'3" Phenix Black Diamond Hybrid that is rated 15-40 and is a fully woven carbon fiber blank. It has Fuji SIC K double foot striper followed by Fuji SIC K single foot series guides with stainless gun metal frames, burl cork that is sealed under finish, a Fuji 18mm reelseat with gun metal hoods, and a Fuji SIC tip in Gun metal. It is wrapped with Madera thread in blue, purple, and pink.

That's a sweet blank. I have 2 phenix blanks and couldnt be happier with them. Nice rod

I'd like to ask how you did the cork that way, or where you got it if it came that way, but i'm afraid you'd have to kill me right afterwards ;) lol

What do you mean that way?

I mean is it just really high grade stuff or ????? looks fantastic

It's burl cork that has been sealed under finish.

I have had my rod a week. How long have you had to play with yours? Not to mention you live at the beach. We will wait until after the brown units stop swimming by. Don't want to get caught with your jig in the water and a fish right next to you.

Looks good grasshopper,but the next time your in ask me show the trick on getting the chevrons perfectly alined.

I am always up to learn anything new that might aid in advancing my knowledge and skill in rod building. I must say without your aid and mentoring I wouldn't be anywhere near the rod builder that I am today. That's the reason I worked so hard to find that thing from last summer. Once again thank you for everything you have done to help me.

Place an 8' fluorescent a couple feet above your lathe. This creates a perfectly strait light line on the blank. Once your finished making your first series of wraps,use your pointed burnishing tool to line the "X" 's perfectly. Look at the light line in the close-up pic of the chevron and you can see what I'm talking about. Don't worry,it only took me 10 years to figure that one out. Awesome job buddy......

well John, not even aimed at me and I still learned something REALLY helpful, been using a ruler and it works, but not great, how much does that light cost?

Not yet. The one I did catch was on my old beater tower rod.

I know this thread is a year old but I am wanting to get a Phenix Hybrid cobia rod myself. Do you remember the model # of your blank? I am thinking I need to select one of these 3 blanks (from the Phenix website):
