    Collapsable beach fishing cart

I decided to make a beach cart from an old Radio Flyer collapsable wagon I found at the dump. One wheel was bent and I guess that’s why they tossed it. Since I was going to rework the wheels that wasn’t a problem.

The beach wheel axle size is considerably larger,...so the old set up has to go.

Had some box steel around that was the perfect size to fit over the existing axle support struts. I just slitted it and bent the tabs over to make for stronger welds.

I actually made the new axles from a few concrete form stakes I had around. Just the right size,..and some holes already drilled for the retaining washers and cotter pins, haha.

The old yoke was needing reworked. I decided to beat it out cold,...I could have fired up the forge and done it hot but I figured the steel in this was so low carbon it really didn’t matter. I had to add some metal to extend the yoke to accommodate the big wheels.

Got the yoke mounted up. I used the old swivel piece and just relocated it to the center so it would pivot. What’s not shown is that I welded the handle mount to the wheel yoke so the wheel would swivel with the handle. Now the wheel is hard attached to the handle and when you’re pulling the cart and make a turn the wheel follows the handle. The original two wheel design wasn’t like this,...the wheels were independent of the handle. That works with two wheels but just doesn’t work with a single wheel. It’ll turn, but it’s not very responsive. I guess it has something to do with two wheels being able to resist each other or something or other. Dunno,..all I know is that I tried it with a free swiveling wheel and it really didn’t work. Once I attached the handle pivot to the wheel pivot,...it works.

    Here’s the finished cart.
All there is to do now is strap on the cooler, tackle box, rod holder and the lawn chair.
The collapsed cart now fits in the owners closet in the condo. That keeps me from having to drag it back and forth from Auburn. I made a pier cart also, but it’s not collapsable. I just keep it there in the condo but will have to bring it back and forth if we ever rent it out.

Just thought maybe folks would want to see the project and maybe make one of their own. It’s really convenient that it collapses.
