Thread: Reel Grease question/options/recommendations

Doing total maintenance on all my reels right now.

I have some synthetic automotive wheel bearing grease I use on various things like AR buffer springs and such...all larger items than reel parts.

Anyone know or have experience with whether something like that is ok to use on reels...or should I use some kind of marine-grade boat grease?

I used to use various branded reel greases 'for fishing reels' but would prefer not to pay a premium unless it makes a big diff.

I use "Super Lube" grease and Quantum Hot Sauce oil.

If you plan on dunking your reels or surf fishing with them, I would go with a marine grade grease. You can purchase the cans of penn marine grade reel grease online for a pretty reasonable price.

Academy Sports has some pretty good reel grease and oil for also.

I use the penn oil,penn grease and the penn rod and reel cleaner they are fairly cheap for the amount you get.I ordered mine from amazon.

I cleaned and repaired fresh water reels for several years. If you do a lot of reel maintenance, buy an ultrasonic cleaner, preferably heated. Disassemble reel and put unpainted parts in cleaner with 50% water and 50% "Simple Green". It does all the work for you, no brushing or picking out crud with toothpicks. Rinse off with fresh water, dry, lube, and reassemble. I clean bearings with butane lighter fluid, blow them out with air and allow to dry before lubing. NOTE: Do not use the ultrasonic cleaner to clean painted parts, it will dull the paint! Good Luck!

Penn reel grease is really good grease. As Pest said, you can get it on line at a reasonable cost.
