How to Inflame Your Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

All you have to do is be the typical DIY'er willing to wade into a project with little to no prior practical knowledge.
I spent half a hour online looking for tutorials and then in blissful ignorance, stepped off the end of the sandbar into a cut with water up to my earlobes and a strong current.

So your thinking, "Dang Chile, shut up and tell us what you did already."

I completely disassembled, overhauled & upgraded my,
Penn Spinfisher 7500SS
Penn Jigmaster - 505HS
Penn Beachmaster - 155
Penn Senator 6/0 - 114H
Disassemble, thoroughly clean/degrease, inspect all parts, replace/upgrade drag washers, lubricate and reassemble.
I upgraded the drag washers with the new HT-100s and I also lubed the stacks.
The lubing of Penn drag stacks was a subject of some online debate, but I went ahead and did it and it seems to be OK.

The pain in my wrists/hands, was the reassembly.
There has to be some tips/tricks to holding multiple screws in place, while installing multiple springs, spring loaded parts/parts groups.
Tape didn't work, not even the redneck stand-by, duct tape :o
And these Penns are supposedly the uncomplicated, user friendly, easy maintenance reels, I'm glad for that.

So, any tips/tricks for making the reassembly of these any easier?

I did the 155 first, as it is the oldest and the one I don't plan on using any time soon.
Therefore if it ended up as a 'Box-Of-Parts' or with parts lost in another dimension, it wouldn't chap my arse as bad.
It took me a hour of cussing, dropping screws, parts/springs popping out and all this to the great amusement of my wife :evil:
The 505HS went back together in about half a hour, with only half the dropping, popping and cussing.
Finally got to the 114H, and it was pretty much a breeze except for my wrists/hands screaming at me.

All in all, I think I did a pretty good job of'em.
They all free spool for much longer than before, nothing to brag on, but much better than before.
Same with the drags, much smoother and the 114H even test at a steady 20# of drag.
My learning curve was pretty good I'd say, but, if I never have to overhaul another gunky reel, it'll be too soon.

I'll be needing several big Kings or Jacks to test my drags... Here fishy fishy! :fishing:

Chile---You brought back old, not-so-fond memories of my yearly overhaul of all the reels for my charter boat---six 113H, four 114, seven 67s,and I forget the model numbers of the smaller reels used for Spanish trolling. It got old and boring very quickly. Carpal tunnel syndrome hadn't been discovered back then, so my wrists and forearms just hurt. I sympathize.

When working with springs, etc., i use some knitting tools attached to our sewing machine kit to hold them in place. I'm sure, however, there are tools you can get designed for it.

Knitting tools feel great, though. It's like adding a few extra fingers to your hand without much stress.

omg,,this little bit of work could not be that big a deal..if these task are giving you any irritation just get some Gyne-Lotrimin to fix your problem.... :poke1:

[/quote]Yep, some types of movement really get it going for me, e.g. exerting thumb pressure into the palm, a few minutes and things stiffen up and go numb. Had to give up rock climbing in the gym years ago because of this problem.

Mountain climbing must be real tough on the fingers. I could climb a little as a kid, but now I'm sure I'm too old and fat to even do pullups anymore.

Working on reels has got to be a bit slower paced than what you're accustomed to. Still, a great experience nonetheless. 8)

Climbing around on a jetty is as close as I wanna get to mountain climbing.

1. Make fewer posts in forums. Everyone knows typing aggravates carpal tunnel syndrome. Save your posting for when you genuinely have something to add to a discussion.
2. Sometimes you may have a question that you need answered. That's cool we all do at sometime or another, but few of these questions are unique and haven't been asked and answered many times over. The "search" function found on almost all forums and search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing and many others are amazing tools. Type in a few key words and find many answers. For example when one types in, "Penn reel repair tutorial" on Google, you find this site.http://alantani.com/ If you are about to embark on a project you know little or nothing about, gathering information prior to starting is useful. If you're busy posting, you aren't gathering information.
3. If you stub your toe, have a runny nose or you're having a bad day in general just STFU. We all have problems and ailments.That is one of the biggest differences that separates us from women and children is that real men don't complain about such in public, much less post it on the internet.

I see that you've put it together.

1. I couldn't care less if anyone thinks I post too much or what I say is extraneous to the thread.
At least I don't jump into others threads and be insulting towards them.
2. I know very well how to search, did so, was using Alantani's tutorial and still was curious about any tricks to make it easier.
