Things you need:

1. Sevenstrand uncoated wire preferably in 27 or 60 pound. 40 pound is frowned upon in this area for various reasons. Do not use coated wire under any circumstances!

2. Eagle Claw or VMC treble hooks in sizes 6, 4, 2, 1, or 1/0. The smaller the number, the bigger the hook. The size of the baits will dictate what hook size you choose. Generally speaking, a size 4 is good for cigar minnows of all sizes and small hardtails. Size 1 would be for bigger hardtails and big menhaden. Size 6 would be for Spanish fishing with LY's or finger mullett.

3. 30 - 50 pound rated swivels in black color as small as size as you can find. Doesn't matter what brand. Tsunami and Bill Fisher are 2 brands that I have used.


4. A good pair of wire cutters. I only use the best and that is Klein brand electricians pliers. Average price is around 30 dollars. They have absolutely nothing to do with fishing but as an ex electrician myself, I know there is nothing in the fishing industry that will match up to these.

Make the leader:

1. Cut a piece of Sevenstrand about 18 to 24 inches long. Some people like long leaders, some like short. Too long you can't cast, too short you get clipped easier. Find your medium.

2. With the wire in one hand and the treble hook in the other - run one piece of the wire through the eye of the treble hook on the flat shank side. Only run it out to the bends in the hook.

3. Hold one piece of the wire in place and with the other hand start making ten wraps around the shank of the hook making sure the wraps are not on top of each other.

4. After your wraps are done take the other end of the wire and come back through the eye of the hook, and pull it tight.

5. On the free end of the wire tie an overhand granny knot to your swivel. Cut the tag end off as close as possible.

6. Wrap the leader around 2 fingers, pull it off, secure the ends, and store it away.[/size]

I start out with an owner size 1 or 1/O hook a swivel and about 3ft of 60# sevenstrand

If this is to complicated a simple Overhand Knot will do the trick. Simply tie a Overhand Knot tighten the leader and cut off the tag end about a 1/4 inch.

I like the figure 8 knot, easy to tie and strong

I used to use a Gangaknots, but the OH or 8 is much easier and more dependable. :fishing:

Yep the way I like to do it is a snelled hook like calvin explains, and a figure eight to the swivel. The way Jimmy Summers and John G. do it is also pretty cool. Have to see if we can't get a tutorial on it someday soon too.

Hey Fin, you wouldn't happen to know a link for the "gangaknot"? Searched the web but nothing came up

comeing down this coming weekend for a week looking foward to fishing on the pier just wondering what the reasons are for not useing 40# seven strand any help would be great

I have never had any luck with the overhand knots or figure eight knots. They are ok but if you have any kind of impact on them they are prone to breaking. I like to use the snell on the hook and the wrap as described in the original post for the swivel. It has never failed me. The only problem with the snell is that you loose some of the freedom of the bait so I normally have a few leaders tied with the wrap on the hook as well.

I landed my first tarpon (1978) and many kings on uncoated 40# Sevenstrand and both the hook and the swivel were secured only with two overhand knots.
Those knots (when cinched down tight) absolutely will not shift or unravel. :headbang:

I use a single overhand knot with 20 or 30lb AFW surfstrand and leave a 16th of an inch of tag after cinching it down.

Use 40# more kings for me :D Its cursed to hell i use 30lb or 60lb

Hard to beat them Walmart black leaders with that nice shinny snap swivel to clip the hook on with. Don't hafe to fool with all that knot tyin and twistin stuff :yippee:

As an added bonus you won't have to bother dealing with many fish either. If a fish is stupid enough to hit a Walmart leader and so weak it can't escape, then it is time for that fish to be removed from the breeding population. Genetic improvement through inferior terminal tackle, wow who'd a thunk it

When I first started fishing the pier (40 years ago) we would use the 9" long 3 pack leaders from Sears.
Something like this...

They were all shiney and silver with a HUGE snap that could be undone and slipped through the mouth and out the gill of a partially thawwed cigar minnow.
Then we'd clip a #2 treble hook on it and chunk it out for mackerel.
My buddy Tommy landed a 46# king on such a rig that remains as the DIPier record king to today. :headbang:
We caught a LOT of those dumb ole fish like that back then, and we lost a lot too when the snap would straighten out and the hook would pull off.
Not to mention the cut offs by small mackerel, bluefish and such.
I still remember the day Ms. 'Skeet' Walton and Mr. Cicero Nelson sat Tommy and I down at the picnic table to show us how to make a haywire twist with single strand wire leader. :headbang:
