Oh thats right, there are already million notches in the pier railing.

Or you could always hold it....
I personally wouldn't want someone walking on to my pier cutting notches.
Those notches are really nice when you are bent over the rail trying to help net or gaff a fish and you get skewered by a big old splinter where someone notched the rail without consideration for fellow anglers. Not to mention vandalism to state property.

Another tip: Carry a knife or clippers, in case you need to accidentally cut zip-ties.
Those notches are how I mark my personal spots on the rail, so when I tell you to move I can prove that you're in my place.
Don't leave your rod unattended it may end up swimming.
